MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes has been a huge fan of the Pokémon games since he can remember. However, the latest titles in the series have disappointed him. However, a role-playing game on Steam awakens his nostalgia and currently costs less than 3 € on Steam.
What game is it? I love the Pokémon series. I watched the series as a child, collected the cards, and especially played the games. In particular, the third generation has captured my heart. I spent countless hours with Emerald and FireRed.
The latest installments and remakes, however, have failed to evoke that nostalgic euphoria. Luckily, there is Coromon on Steam. This role-playing game is perfect for Pokémon fans who long for the good old days.

Like in the holidays back then
The nostalgia develops at first sight. Coromon presents itself in a beautiful pixel style that is most reminiscent of games like Pokémon Emerald on the Game Boy Advance. This atmosphere is also created by the soundtrack, which strongly reminds of the Game Boy Advance sound chip.
The reference to the third Pokémon generation does not stop at the audiovisual presentation. The game is full of puzzles in the overworld alongside the classic turn-based battles. Most of these are solved using abilities that you acquire throughout the story. This also reminds me of the Sky Tower from Pokémon Emerald, where I failed for hours as a child.
Of course, the main focus should again be the monsters. In Coromon, they are also nicely designed and in addition to the normal variants, you can find others that are stronger or look different from the normal versions. While they may not reach the memorable designs of Pokémon, you still feel joy with each new Coromon.
With a Steam Deck on the couch, I feel like Coromon brings me back to winter break, without worries and with a Game Boy Advance with Pokémon Emerald. The presentation is charming, and the game speed is perfect for sinking a few hours.
Nostalgic, but not outdated
Coromon does not rely solely on nostalgia. Coromon has implemented many features that keep it modern. There are various difficulty levels, which are also based on the Nuzlocke challenge that is popular among fans. The options menu offers many settings, allowing you to customize your experience.
Additionally, there is a randomizer that keeps the story feeling fresh even upon replay. This randomizes the Coromon that you can encounter. With daily and weekly challenges, you can unlock skins for yourself and your Coromon.
Coromon is what I have been wishing for as a remake for years. I don’t want a soulless 3D appearance. I want a remake that focuses on beautiful pixel graphics and extended features that bring the old titles into the modern era.
Coromon is a solid overall package that works not only for veterans or newcomers but for both groups. You can make the game hard for yourself or just casually play it. And I believe that is exactly what modern Pokémon games should do as well.
How much does Coromon cost? Normally, Coromon costs 18.49 €, but currently you can get the game for 2.77 € on Steam. At this price, fans of the series who want to indulge in nostalgia should definitely grab it. This offer is valid until March 20, 2025.
