In the survival game Valheim you can “cheat” various advantages using admin commands. For many fans of the genre this is quite normal, while newcomers may be a bit confused by this practice. We now want to know from you: is cheating actually okay?
This is how cheats work in Valheim: The survival game offers the possibility to enter admin commands. These are essentially cheat codes that are entered via the console and then have an effect. For example, you can:
- activate debug mode and fly or build for free
- spawn resources and enemies directly in front of you
- tame animals without having to go through the taming process for a long time
- spawn armor and weapons
- kill all nearby enemies or make loot disappear
Additionally, there are some codes for items in the commands that don’t yet exist in the game – such as the secret sword Dyrnwyn, which you can only obtain via console command.
In our guide, you will find all admin commands in Valheim and how to use them.
Cheating in Valheim – Is it okay?
Many players, especially purists, do not like cheats, even if they are “just” harmless admin commands. The fact that cheats are frowned upon has even been noticed by the developers, who changed the command “imacheater” to “devcommands”.
Other players have no problem with it. After all, these commands only work on your own server – unless the operator of another server allows cheats for everyone. This way, even solo players can experience the entire game without having to struggle through the brutal boss fights and fail at them.
In video games, cheats or cheat codes (especially in older games) originated from development. They served developers to test certain things in the game without having to earn everything. The codes were often incorporated into the finished game.
Today, cheats are primarily known as external programs, such as in shooters, that spoil the fun for other players in the form of “wallhacks” or “aimbots”. In survival games, however, these developer commands are often still included and serve players to build creatively in their own games or overcome hurdles they cannot manage on their own.
Some others simply find the creative mode very useful, as Valheim offers many opportunities to express themselves with their bases. Some players recreate the harbor of Stormwind, while others create an entire village for themselves.
Such things are of course easier with debug mode. And making annoying loot disappear from the ground is also useful – but technically it is a cheat. You can now vote on what you think about this.
The admin commands are not the only way to make Valheim easier. Many players now turn to mods that allow them to change or add certain mechanics or even make the whole game harder. We present you the 9 best mods for Valheim and explain how to install them.
But even without mods and cheats, meaning completely “vanilla”, Valheim is really fun – even for hundreds of hours. You just have to know how to keep yourself occupied. That’s why we asked a veteran player who explained to us how you can still have fun in Valheim after over 267 hours.
