The MMORPG ArcheAge is known for the many freedoms it offers. One of them is the construction and design of your own house in the open world. In this guide, we will reveal to you how this works.
How do you build a house? The housing system in ArcheAge is somewhat more complex than in many other MMORPGs. Broadly outlined, you need to undertake the following steps, which we will explain in a bit more detail later:
- First, you need a blueprint for your house. You can take a look at these on Mirage Island, a special island. However, you can now purchase them in the marketplace for Gilda currency.
- Then, you need to find a location in the open world where building can take place.
- Additionally, you need the appropriate materials to construct the house.
- Last but not least, you must regularly pay taxes so that your house can stay in place and is not demolished.
- Alternatively, you can also directly buy a ready-built house from another player. However, the taxes remain.
Even though the steps initially sound cumbersome, housing in ArcheAge can be really rewarding. Besides decorating and creative expression, you can also plant food and even practice crafting in your house.
Differences between ArcheAge Free2Play and Unchained: In the Free2Play version of ArcheAge, you strictly need a subscription to be able to build a house. However, this can theoretically also be purchased for gold from other players. In ArcheAge Unchained, any player can build a house.
Building a house in ArcheAge – Step by step
Getting a blueprint: First, you need to travel to Mirage Island. You can access it through the blue portals on the map. There, you can view your desired houses. After that, head to the marketplace and purchase your corresponding house. For this, you will need the Gilda currency (in Unchained, you can pay with either Gilda or Vigor).
You can earn Gilda through the storyline, daily quests, and world bosses, and in Unchained as a reward for the premium version of the pass. Additionally, through missions in the Battlepass, you also receive Vigor, the other required currency.
Houses come in sizes of 16×16, 24×24, 28×28, or 44×44 fields. The larger the house, the more currency and materials you will need for construction.
Finding the right location: The hardest part about housing in ArcheAge is finding a free location where the house can be constructed. There are special areas in the game that are marked on the map as settlements. However, since housing takes place in the open world, the building spots are limited.
On top of that, not every building spot is right for you. Some are located in safe zones where no PvP takes place. Others are right in the war zone, which can significantly reduce the relaxation factor. Additionally, different housing zones provide different bonuses. Depending on the climate, plants grow differently.
You will need to travel around and see where you find a nice little spot. A tip is looking for “demolished houses.” These indicate that the player has not paid their taxes. After a certain time, these houses will be demolished, and the space will be free for your own needs.
Constructing a house: Once you have found a suitable location and have a blueprint for your house, you can now construct it. For this, you will need a certain number of wood and stone packages as well as tax certificates. These are the same currency that you need for the weekly taxes.
For the stone packages, you need 300 stones, which you combine into 100 stone bricks. This costs work points. From the 100 stone bricks, one package is made. The same calculation applies to the wood. Some houses additionally need iron.
You can obtain tax certificates in exchange for credits (real money, only Free2Play) at the marketplace, or for gold in the auction house, as well as for vigor (only in Unchained).

How much tax must be paid? The taxes depend on the size and number of your houses. A 16×16 house, for example, costs 15 tax certificates. However, if you own multiple houses, you will have to pay more overall per house.
How is the tax paid? At your house, you can pay the tax for up to 5 weeks in advance. Should you fail to pay for a house in time, you have two weeks to settle the taxes. However, this incurs a late payment fee.
What happens to my house if I do not pay? Should you not pay within the 2 weeks, your house will be demolished. You will lose a significant part of the furnishings and your building spot.
