When the winners of the German Computer Game Awards in all categories were announced on the evening of April 27, 2020, Apex Legends was among them. Some readers on MeinMMO were apparently surprised, as the comments under the article show.
Apex Legends caused a huge stir upon its release and has received constant updates since then. Several changes have been made, fulfilling long-standing wishes of fans. Nevertheless, it does not seem to be a clear favorite for the “Top Multiplayer Game 2020” as it has seemingly faded from the spotlight in recent months.
Is Apex Legends worth it in 2020?
What is currently happening in Apex Legends: The battle royale is now running Apex Legends Season 4, which you can still play until May 12, 2020. Season 4 started on February 4, 2020, and brought, among other things:
- the new legend Revenant, introduced with a bloody trailer
- a new weapon: the sniper rifle Sentinel
- a fresh Battle Pass with many new cosmetics to unlock
Especially Revenant has provided joy among players with his unique abilities and the really good PR campaign he was introduced with. The now fourth new legend brings more variety and new fun to the game.
What else is new? The developers have also introduced numerous updates within the seasons and with them new events. Recently, on April 7, the “old customs event” started, with a permanent duo mode introduced and the map King’s Canyon returned. The two maps rotate in the selection.
The duo mode is a feature that players have long wanted and has been tested repeatedly in events. It is now permanently available for King’s Canyon and the new map World’s Edge. Only ranked matches continue to be restricted to trios.
This is the trend with Apex Legends: The initial enthusiasm for Apex Legends from February 2019 has diminished somewhat in the last 12 months.
The events that were held regularly have also led to frustration with the community, such as over expensive skins.
However, recent changes like the duo mode and map rotation have apparently brought reconciliation and new momentum. In the subreddit for Apex Legends, fans are still actively discussing, including the new features.
Apex Legends – Still good in 2020?
While there are no official player numbers, the activity on Reddit alone still indicates a strong core of players who stick with Apex Legends. The battle royale offers strong shooter gameplay, which was already praised in Titanfall, the universe in which it is set.
The rounds are always good for fast, intense action and a pleasant “flow.” Additionally, features that are still so good today that other shooters want to copy them.
Apex Legends still remains popular: In the past 30 days, Apex Legends was only 19th among the most viewed games on Twitch (as of April 28, via sullygnome). During this time, the game lost 22.6% of its average viewers.
Apex Legends thus falls behind long-term hits like World of Warcraft and Fortnite, but also behind new Twitch hits like Valorant or Call of Duty: Warzone. Nevertheless, it is still more popular on Twitch than genre colleague PUBG.
MeinMMO author Benedict Grothaus says: Although I play less Apex Legends than before – there is just too much else to do – I still have a lot of fun when I fire up the game again. In fact, it still captivates me more than the new CoD battle royale Warzone can at the moment.
Whether I personally would call it the “best multiplayer game,” I cannot say. However, Apex Legends is still a top-notch game in 2020. Since it is free, it doesn’t hurt anyone to give it a chance. So: Yes, for me, Apex Legends is still worth it in 2020.
