The legends in Apex Legends all have various hitbox sizes, known as hitboxes. A YouTuber has taken the effort to find out the hitbox of each legend. The result: some legends are indeed harder to hit.
How were the hitboxes calculated? YouTuber SookieSpy documented all the hitboxes of the characters in Apex Legends through trial and hours of compilation.
To do this, he landed in the same spot with a friend and shot at him with bullets to test where the hitbox ends. From the individual impact points, he then formed shapes from his recordings.
With the same method, he already found out that the legend Pathfinder has a larger hitbox than its model actually shows. For most legends, however, the hitbox is quite accurately aligned with the model.
This was found out about hitboxes: The video spread quickly and a fan took the time to compare all hitboxes. He then posted his size comparison on reddit. Here are his results:
- Wraith – the smallest hitbox
- Lifeline – 12% larger
- Bloodhound – 12% larger
- Mirage – 33% larger
- Bangalore – 33% larger
- Pathfinder – 90% larger
- Caustic – 105% larger
- Gibraltar – 140% larger
There are no data yet regarding the new legend Octane.
The legend Wraith has the smallest hitbox of all legends. She is not only the smallest hero but also moves crouched, significantly reducing her target area. She is considered to be the hardest target to hit and a standard for all other legends.
However, it should be noted that movement patterns such as Bloodhound’s stance affect the hitboxes, and critical hit zones such as the head are not taken into account. In motion, some legends are harder or easier to hit. Accessories and details, like equipment on the back of the popular healer Lifeline or Caustic’s lab coat, are not part of the hitbox.
What does this mean for Apex Legends?
In general, a smaller hitbox means that the hero is harder to hit and therefore can survive more easily. Smaller legends thus have an advantage over larger ones and can move up the tier list of Apex Legends.
Some fans are even convinced that the different hitboxes have a significant impact on the game. On reddit, it is currently being discussed whether some legends need a buff to compensate for their size. Ideas include more health points or an automatic upgrade to found armor.
The size of hitboxes is not everything. All legends in Apex Legends have unique abilities. While Gibraltar is the largest hero, he is also the only one who automatically receives a shield when aiming to protect him.
As the site PCGamer explains, factors such as personal skill also come into play. Because of the abilities, the hitboxes are a “non-quantifiable” factor. What would truly provide insight would be numbers about the pick rate and win rate of each legend. A health point buff would, however, be detrimental as it would make the “time to kill” inconsistent.
In another thread on reddit, the developers have already confirmed that the issue is known. They are discussing it but cannot yet say what changes will be made or when.
