After a rather chaotic patch in Apex Legends, a feature has now appeared that was not supposed to be active at all. The developers have already reacted and deleted it again, but the discussion about the feature has already started.
What feature is it about? With the patch from April 3rd, Respawn introduced a “Leaver Penalty” to Apex Legends, meaning a penalty for players who leave the match early.
However, implementing the feature was not the intention at all, and it came about only due to a script error. The patch also brought other issues and deleted all progress for many players.
How does this penalty work? As the penalty worked in the patch, leavers should be punished after three matches left:
- Anyone who leaves three matches early receives a five-minute ban.
- This only applied if their teammates could still revive them.
- So, if someone was completely killed but could still be taken to one of the revival beacons, they received a penalty.
- The match could only be safely left once the timer ran out.
By the way, the penalty did not apply at all if the team was not full. Only the first leaver was punished.
This is how the feature was received: Respawn released the announcement about the feature and its removal on reddit. There, fans also discussed the penalty, although other topics like a better system against cheaters are more prominent.
However, the feature itself was well received despite its unfinished state. The user aki5 writes:
Honestly, the leaver penalty helps to curb bots, as they leave the game before the round even starts. Please also implement harsher penalties for repeat offenders.
When will the penalty come as a feature? Respawn emphasized once again that the implementation was not intentional and therefore did not appear in the patch notes. There is also no exact date for the release yet.
At the moment, they are still testing, and it is possible that the feature will not come at all. Even though it was already in the game, Respawn has emphasized earlier that tested features can sometimes still be discarded.
