Are you also fully caught up in the Witcher fever? The new series on Netflix has brought the Witcher Geralt back on the map. Wait a minute – maps? That immediately reminds you of the next opportunity to spend some time in the Witcher world: GWENT.
The Witcher series makes you crave for more: Since last Friday, December 20, 2019, the Witcher series has been airing on Netflix. After eight episodes, it was already over – unfortunately. Because after the brief trip back into the world of the Witcher Geralt, you actually don’t want to be done with the Witcher again so quickly.
After all, the wait for fans of the series was quite long – regardless of whether you prefer the books or the games. The book series has already been read long ago, and The Witcher: Wild Hunt is also more than four years old. The last expansion, Blood and Wine, was released in 2016 – and is already a few years old. The series came just at the right time to dive back into the Witcher world.
The great and simultaneously annoying thing about it: Now you’re fully back in it – but around Christmas time, you might not have the time to invest many hours in “Wild Hunt” again. Good that there’s another Witcher game fans of the series could turn to.
GWENT: The Card Game for Witcher Fans
This is GWENT: If you have played Witcher 3 (which you certainly have), then you probably already know GWENT. It is a tactical card game that CD Projekt Red had embedded as a mini-game in Wild Hunt. You could collect cards, build decks, and challenge every third NPC in the game to a round of GWENT.
However, once you started, you quickly realized that the actual mini-game could be incredibly fun. Hours were sometimes spent searching for cards and winning tournaments – a development that CD Projekt Red also noticed.
In 2017, GWENT was then released as a standalone game on consoles, PC, and mobile devices. Especially the mobile version is perfect for a few matches in between to dive back into the Witcher world.
This is what GWENT looks like: The game is logically based on the mini-game from Wild Hunt, but has also made a few expansions to the rules that make it more tactical. You can choose from different factions and build decks with which you then compete online against other players.
You get new cards for in-game currency from the shop or in exchange for real money. The nice thing is: GWENT can be played completely without the use of real money.
And for being just a card game, a lot of Witcher feeling comes up. This is partly due to the designs of the battlefields, the leaders who come directly from the game, and of course the cards. They are portrayed by characters you know from the game or from the books and the series.
A particularly important role is also played by the sound design. The music is fantastic, and the sound effects of individual cards create a battle atmosphere.
What is the current state of GWENT? If you want to check out the game due to the current Witcher fever, you should do so either on mobile or on PC – because the console versions will not last much longer. They are already functioning only partially and will be shut down on June 9, 2020.

When we look to the future, we do not believe that we can support this growing number of different versions of GWENT while ensuring equal features and quality.
The versions on PC and smartphones are by far the most popular platforms among GWENT players. Therefore, we had to make a tough decision: we are discontinuing support for the console versions of GWENT.
