According to Twitter, the Lead Producer for Anthem has confirmed again that the shooter will not have loot boxes. Together with the cosmetics that can be purchased through microtransactions or earned in-game, questions arise about the financing of the games-as-a-service title.
What is it about? After the controversy regarding the loot boxes in Star Wars: Battlefront 2, players are wondering if Anthem will feature this system as well. After all, both games are published by Electronic Arts.
Michael Gamble, the Lead Producer for Anthem, has now confirmed again, that Anthem will not have loot boxes. Gamble stated on Twitter that loot boxes in the game “would not make sense”. Instead of loot boxes, optional cosmetic microtransactions will be offered.
This is what Anthem plans for content: BioWare has quite ambitious plans for Anthem, as players should not have to spend additional money on the games-as-a-service title after the purchase.
- Anthem will not have loot boxes
- There will be no season pass
- The story DLCs will be free to avoid splitting the player base
As Michael Gamble already affirmed in another Twitter post, players should buy Anthem and not have to worry about things like a season pass afterwards.

Paid DLCs or season passes are actually typical for the games-as-a-service genre and known from titles like Destiny 2 or The Division. Furthermore, there will be no option for pay-to-win, meaning the ability to become more powerful through money.
What does the financing look like? However, Anthem will not be completely free of microtransactions either. However, they should only be cosmetic in nature and can also be earned in the game. Players will only have to pay if they want to get the cosmetics faster.
Mark Darrah from BioWare did not entirely rule out on Twitter that there will be DLC after launch for which players will have to pay. He mentioned new Javelins that represent the classes in Anthem as an example. However, this has not yet been decided.
