The online shooter Anthem will launch without PvP, but that is not a decision for eternity. PvP may come after the launch. But at the moment, many Anthem fans seem to be able to do without it very well.
Who is speaking? It is the Executive Producer Mike Gamble speaking with the US side Comicbook. They had discussions at the sidelines of the Video Game Awards.
This is what Gamble says about PvP: Gamble says that PvP is something that is “definitely interesting” for the team, but it has to fit the overall feel of the game.
This is what the fans are discussing: The decision that Anthem will completely forgo PvP at launch, has been known since June. Players will not be able to compete against each other in any form, but will only play against AI-controlled opponents.
Since then, the forgoing of PvP has been a topic that is repeatedly discussed on reddit.
In the subreddit for Anthem, there is a prevailing opinion that Anthem does not need PvP. Comparable loot shooters like Destiny and The Division already offer PvP. Therefore, many on Reddit are satisfied that Anthem is taking a different approach and wants to focus on PvE.
Arguments against PvP:
- There are fears that PvP could lead to balancing issues – just like in other games.
- Without PvP, it would be possible to obtain especially powerful weapons from bosses that significantly increase the power level. Players apparently want that.
- Furthermore, one player mentioned that he had spent hundreds of hours in Diablo 3 or Borderlands 2 without missing PvP.
- Additionally, some believe that SWTOR has shown that BioWare cannot do PvP – it quickly became dull in the Star Wars MMORPG.
- Moreover, PvP often attracts a toxic, unpleasant community.
Are there also people who wish for PvP? Yes, there are. But these are often people who are not part of the Anthem community but have decided against the game early on.
They note that PvP gives a game high potential for replayability. They believe that Anthem could quickly become boring without PvP.
