Is the story in Anthem really that important? Initial statements from the developers leave some fans in doubt.
At the announcement of Anthem at the last E3, viewers were thrilled by the first gameplay scenes. But can the game meet the high expectations and have a compelling story? After all, it’s a game from BioWare, and fans will be particularly attentive to the background story.
The General Manager of BioWare, Aaryn Flynn, revealed some details in an interview with CBC Radio about how the world of Anthem will be structured. Here is his statement translated from English:
“According to the story, you are a part of humanity and part of a group called “Freelancers”, who are out here to protect humanity on an alien planet.
This is a genre we call “science-fantasy”, which is very similar to Star Wars or the Marvel Universe, where you see numerous fascinating things, but we don’t worry too much about why they happen, meaning the science behind it. Mass Effect has been a true hardcore science fiction IP; this one [Anthem] is more about simply having fun in the game world and immersing yourself in the lush and exotic environment.”
Some fans are already worried that due to this statement, the story behind Anthem might just be an “accessory” and won’t receive enough attention. However, it should be noted that Drew Karpyshyn is involved in the story, who was also primarily responsible for the narrative in Star Wars: The Old Republic and the first “Mass Effect” games.
