Until now, these inscriptions have been very opaque and are not really explained anywhere in the game. For this reason, Bioware has now written an extensive Reddit post that explains the inscriptions.
Guide finally explains how inscriptions work
This is how inscriptions affect your gear: The guide to inscriptions finally answers many fans’ questions and clarifies the effect of an inscription.
- Many players did not realize that the gear symbol behind an inscription means that this inscription only applies to the specific piece of equipment it belongs to.
- If, however, there is a symbol with a Javelin image behind the inscription, the inscription is permanently active. For example, if you have an inscription on a weapon that increases physical damage and it also has a Javelin icon, the physical damage bonus applies even when you are not actively using that weapon.
This is how weapon and equipment damage is calculated: Bonuses must also be accounted for with the base damage of the respective piece of equipment; the display only shows the original value.
- If a weapon has 1044 base damage and additionally 125% weapon damage as an inscription, you need to calculate the actual damage value yourself.
- The same applies to skills that have a bonus for equipment damage.
Inscriptions have categories

The lower the category, the weaker the inscription. The category of your inscriptions depends on the rarity level of your equipment and is divided into Primary and Secondary:
- Minor
- Major
- Epic

What is the difference between primary and secondary inscriptions? Primary inscriptions achieve significantly higher values than secondary inscriptions.
The inscription tier additionally determines how high such a value can be. The highest values are accordingly epic primary inscriptions, which can only be achieved by legendary equipment.
