The next expansion of World of Warcraft will have to do without a popular addon. The creators of ElvUI are stopping.
Blizzard has declared war on many addons. In World of Warcraft, there should be equal opportunities, which is why the functions of many addons are being restricted. However, this also affects many addons that one might not initially think about. One of the most popular addon packages is “ElvUI”. The creators behind it now say: The work on it will be paused for now.
What is ElvUI? ElvUI is one of the most well-known addons for customizing the user interface of World of Warcraft on a large scale. This includes not only the appearance of the direct interface, such as the group members or health bar, but also game elements like the “Name Plates”, which are the name plates of enemies in the world, where one can read their HP or see their current debuffs or spell durations.
ElvUI relies on numerous different plugins that allow further customization of the game. If one wishes, they can mimic the interface from Diablo or recreate that of Guild Wars. The various plugins are very popular – some have millions of downloads and thus rank among the most popular interface modifications for World of Warcraft.
ElvUI wants major changes from Blizzard
What have the developers said? In a statement on X, the developer says:
The development of ElvUI for Midnight is officially paused. We would need to see some major changes from Blizzard very soon to offer the interface alternatives that our users want.
This makes it clear: If addons like ElvUI are to have any chance, significant changes would need to be made to the Alpha and the upcoming Beta of Midnight, otherwise the corresponding developers will likely have already halted their projects.
Why is ElvUI stopping? The reason lies with Blizzard, as they are changing World of Warcraft. Many interface addons that extract information during combat will no longer function in the future. This is supposed to affect only addons that are used to gain a gameplay advantage, but inevitably, it also impacts a few addons that alter displays in combat – like the name plates – but do not have as dramatic effects as WeakAuras, which will soon no longer exist.
