Another Blizzard executive is disappearing. The Overwatch 2 team is losing its Executive Producer, Chacko Sonny.
The tremors at Blizzard seem endless. Investigations into the discrimination and sexism scandal continue to overshadow other news about the developer, and more and more people have been laid off or have left voluntarily. Now, the Overwatch 2 team is affected again – the Executive Producer will be gone as of September 24.
What happened? According to a Bloomberg article by Jason Schreier, who is well-connected and has ties to many developers at Blizzard, the Executive Director of Overwatch 2 will leave the company this Friday. The departure has since been confirmed by Blizzard.
Who is Sonny? Chacko Sonny was most recently the Executive Director of Overwatch 2. He has been working with interruptions since 1995 at Activision, initially on MechWarrior. Since 2016, he was employed at Blizzard – first as “Production Director” and later as Executive Producer and “Vice President of Franchise” for Overwatch.
After the departure of Jeff Kaplan, the Overwatch team thus loses another member of its leadership.
In a statement to colleagues, he said it was an “absolute privilege” to work for Blizzard and one of the “best experiences of his career.” The statement made no reference to the current proceedings and the sexism scandal.
From the two Blizzard executives, Jen Oneal and Mike Ybarra, it was stated that they were very grateful for his work and that he had always been a “caring leader.”
Will this affect the release? The big question on everyone’s mind is whether the departure of such an important person will affect the release of Overwatch 2.
At least according to Bloomberg, this probably won’t be the case, as Blizzard stated, “Overwatch 2 is in the final stages of development.” More information is expected by the end of the month – possibly even a firm release date.
