Even before the manga for Kagurabachi was released, fans heralded it as the best anime story of all time. However, the manga seems to live up to its reputation, as now an anime based on the manga is said to be in development.
What kind of manga is this? The manga for Kagurabachi premiered on September 19, 2023. So far, 4 issues and 59 chapters have been released, telling a dark story centered around the boy Chihiro Rokuhira:
- Chihiro is the son of the renowned swordsmith Kunishige Rokuhira. He forged 6 enchanted swords that ended the Seitei War.
- The Rokuhira family is attacked one day by the Hishaku, a criminal gang of sorcerers.
- Kunishige is killed, and Chihiro sets out with the seventh enchanted sword to avenge his father.
The manga was jokingly referred to by fans as the heir to the Big 3 even before the first chapter was released. The Big 3 includes Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece, which are all extremely successful mangas. However, due to the numerous memes, Kagurabachi generated so much attention that it temporarily became the most-read manga at the Shueisha publishing house.

Kagurabachi is likely to get its own anime
How successful is it? Since its release, Kagurabachi often lands in the top 10 of the most-read mangas on Manga Plus, an official site where fans can read mangas from the Shueisha publishing house. The sales numbers were so high, that the publisher had to print multiple editions to meet fans’ demands.
The manga was even recommended by the Naruto mangaka, Masashi Kishimoto. Thus, the meme from which Kagurabachi emerged has become a reality. And now fans can presumably look forward to a big announcement.
What kind of anime is coming next? The editorial team at Toyo Keizai confirmed that an anime based on Kagurabachi is in the works. The anime is set to be produced at the studios of CyberAgent and Shochiku. The subsidiary Cygames has only released smaller animes such as the short film Blade Runner Blackout 2022 and Manaria Friends.
The reason for choosing the two animation studios, according to the producers, is that the larger studios are busy. According to the producers, Kagurabachi will include elements that are popular both in Japan and abroad. Therefore, the anime is sure to be a hit, regardless of which production studio.
