The story of Sword Art Online is not over yet. A new film for the successful anime has been teased after a long period of silence.
Fans of Sword Art Online are eagerly waiting for a continuation. But after the last season “Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld: Part II,” it has been quiet around the series. Now there is a new sign of life – a new film is in development and much suggests that it is not far away.
What is Sword Art Online? Sword Art Online is one of the major anime of the last decade and is regarded as the series that brought great fame to the “Isekai” genre. The boy Kirito participates in a novel MMORPG, where players can immerse themselves fully into the game using “Full Dive” technology.
However, the developer of the game has a sinister plan: all logged-in players are permanently trapped in the game world. If they die in the game, their brain will also be destroyed in the real world by the game’s hardware. This makes the threat in the MMORPG significantly more real, and a fierce battle for survival unfolds among the players. Because only if they succeed in defeating the final boss will they be released.
Even though the plot in the following seasons deviates slightly from this basic idea, the central theme remains the idea of fully immersing players in a digital world, along with the research and its significance for humanity.
What has been announced? A few days ago, the last film of Sword Art Online was shown for the first time on Japanese free TV. Following the program, there was a small teaser from the creators, which was then also published on Twitter:
“A brand new anime film is in production. More information will be available soon!”
Thus, a new film for Sword Art Online is already in production, and the story surrounding Kirito and Asuna will continue.
What is already known about the film? The disappointing answer here is: not much. But at least this is a new sign of life from Sword Art Online. The new film was originally announced back in 2022, but then it went quiet about the project. As almost two years passed without any sign of life, many had already feared that the film had simply been silently scrapped and would never be released.
At least this concern has been alleviated for the fans of SAO – the film is still in production, and with a bit of luck, we may see it later this year or, at the latest, next year.
What plot the film will have is still unknown. The teaser on Twitter only indicates that it will be a “completely new film” – so probably none of the previously known story arcs will be rehashed.
For fans of SAO, it remains exciting – and hopefully there will be more information in the coming months.
