An analysis firm surveyed over 600 gamers on PS4 and Xbox One to see if they would buy Anthem . One in four console owners said “Yes” – which surprised the analysts.
What kind of survey is this? The analysis firm “Piper Jaffray” surveyed over 600 console owners at the end of January about their plans to purchase Anthem:
- 22% said “Yes” and expressed their purchase interest in Anthem, it is stated
For comparison:
- In September 2015, a similar survey for Call of Duty Black Ops 3 showed 40% purchase interest. The game sold 23 to 24 million units in its first year, making it a huge hit.
Purchase intention for Anthem at 25% “surprisingly high”
This is how analysts reacted to the first survey: The analysts were apparently surprised that so many said they wanted to buy Anthem. Because the responses indicated significantly higher sales numbers than the analysts had anticipated.
So Piper Jaffray conducted another smaller survey on 11.2. to confirm or refute their results. In that one, they said
- 35% of console owners said they intended to buy Anthem – even more than in the first survey
Thus, both surveys indicate that one in four owners (25%) of a console plan to acquire Anthem.
This is the insight now: Piper Jaffray has increased their valuation of Electronic Arts’ stock after these two surveys. They speak of “remarkably high interest” in buying the game Anthem.
As confirmation of the thesis, they point out that the ratio of “likes to dislikes” on YouTube for Anthem trailers is surprisingly positive. There are 17 likes for every dislike, and the ratio is similar to that of Call of Duty Black Ops 4 and higher than for titles like Destiny 1 or the last two Assassin’s Creeds.
Piper Jaffray does not think that really every fourth console owner will get Anthem, but still some:
- Before the surveys, they estimated the sales of Anthem by March 31 at 4.5 million units.
- Now they have increased that number to 5 million units
With the 5 million units, Piper Jaffray is about at the level of Electronic Arts itself, which projected 5 to 6 million units.
The sentiment on Metacritic and among some influencers is, however, rather critical towards Anthem.
