The well-known MMORPG RuneScape was banned on X.com for a short time because the developers played a little prank 15 years ago.
Which MMORPG is it about?
- RuneScape, at 23 years old, is one of the oldest and most well-known MMORPGs. It was created by the English development studio Jagex and released in 2001.
- Runescape is a fantasy MMORPG set in a pseudo-medieval world where players fight various enemies with sword and magic and explore the world.
- Over the years, the MMORPG has received numerous updates, which is why the game “Old School RuneScape2” was released, reflecting the state of the original MMORPG in 2007.
In the unlikely event that you have never heard of RuneScape, here is a trailer:
Twitter bans RuneScape account due to a prank
What is the deal with the ban? A few days ago, news spread on social media that the official RuneScape account was banned on X.com/Twitter.
A screenshot of the message “This account does not exist” was shared on Reddit. The message is seen when you try to access a deleted or suspended account via an old link, for example. The account itself can no longer be found through the search function after deletion.
The RuneScape account has over 320,000 followers on the platform and regularly posts or shares information and content related to the famous MMORPG. RuneScape has since been unbanned on X.com and can be accessed normally now.
Why was RuneScape banned? The communications manager of RuneScape developer Jagex revealed to the English-speaking magazine PC Gamer that the account was suspended because X.com believed it was created by someone under the age of 13 when the account was created.
She further reveals that the developers allowed themselves a little joke when creating the account in 2009, stating the release date of the game in 2001 as the birth date. X.com thus recorded that the account was created by an 8-year-old child at that time.
Since X.com can only be used by individuals aged 13 and older, this would constitute a violation of the platform’s guidelines.
Jagex, the studio behind RuneScape, has changed ownership multiple times in the past, most recently in 2021. On February 9, 2024, CVC Capital Partners and Haveli Investments announced that they would purchase Jagex. Previously, the Carlyle Group was the owner of the studio. However, the exact details of the deal are still under wraps. Here you can read the whole story: The most important MMORPG company in Europe is officially sold
