Even after more than 20 years, Anarchy Online is still alive. Just recently, a user shared a picture showing that the MMORPG is still well-attended.
What is Anarchy Online? The science-fiction MMORPG by Funcom was launched in 2001 and takes you to the world of Rubi-Ka, where the substance Notum is fought over. You create a hero that you can enhance through augmentations and participate in the fight for Notum through missions and PvP battles.

What is the state of the game? Although not much has changed graphically in the MMORPG since 2001, many fans still play the game today. The developer Funcom has over the years worked on more and less successful games like Conan Exiles and Age of Conan Unchained and is currently working on the new Dune MMO.
Players are not particularly pleased that the developer spends more time on foreign brands than on its own brand Anarchy Online. The hope for a second part of the game is almost as old as the game itself, and players on Reddit are not saying many good things about the game.

What does the community say about the game? Lowgarr writes on Reddit: “The atmosphere in AO [Anarchy Online] is like nothing I’ve ever experienced in another MMORPG or game, to be honest. Still my #1 MMORPG of all time. Funcom needs to get their head out of the sand (wink) and re-release this masterpiece.”
Lowgarr’s comment refers to the post by LegionofStone who shared a picture of Anarchy Online and wrote: “Anarchy Online may be over 20 years old, but I’m amazed at how stable the population has remained over the years. There’s nothing that has ever come close to AO when it comes to the depth of character development, especially in a science-fiction setting.”
How do the player numbers look? The game is available on Steam, but it is not played there. Player numbers on Steam are usually single digits, but there is a lot of interaction happening on the game’s Discord. The game appears to have players everywhere who are helpful and welcoming to newcomers who give the classic a chance.
What makes the game so special? In addition to an interesting sci-fi world, the game’s uniqueness lies in its equipment system. Here, players don’t just collect gear, but also implants that allow their character to wear better equipment.
The system is complex and not very user-friendly, which is also characteristic of a game from that era.
