A story from Poland has a curious happy ending. A player had two characters stolen from him during a transaction on the gray market in the MMORPG Metin 2. But he did not let it rest and went to the police – short two and a half years later, the district court contacted him.
This happened to the player: An MMORPG player named Filip offered two of his characters in the MMORPG Metin 2 for sale in May 2020. He did this through the platform “AllegroLoacal”: It’s something like the Polish eBay, an “e-commerce site” based in Poznań. He valued the characters at around €640.
The two characters were sold in an auction, but the buyer did not pay. Ultimately, he lost the two characters.
Player Goes to the Police
What the player did: For most people, the case would have ended there, and the characters would simply be gone. That is a known risk in such transactions on the gray market.
The situation was particularly critical because the characters were not on an official Metin-2 server from GameForge, but on a private server.
But as a Facebook group and several Polish sites report, Filip did not want to let it rest and went to the police to report the incident. The police actually took on the case.
The private server could not help him in his plight because even on the private server, the sale of accounts was not supported, and they could only suspend the accounts.
Thief Must Repay Money and Do 300 Hours of Community Service
This is how it ended: After two and a half years, the news came that the police investigation actually ended after a long time with a happy ending.
This is confirmed by a letter from the district court of Kozalin, Criminal Department II, which was shared on Facebook with some names redacted. The investigation of the “unfavorable appropriation of property” took place on September 7. The accused was convicted under paragraph 286, section 1.
The thief was caught and sentenced to complete 30 hours of community service every month for 10 months – unpaid. Furthermore, he must pay the MMORPG player 2850 Zloty in damages. That is about €610.
