The new patch 7.16 of Final Fantasy XIV was released on January 21, 2025, bringing some new features and adjustments. A seemingly minor change could lead to a lot of wipes in the new Chaos Alliance raid.
What is this change? In the patch notes on the official website, there is a subtle note that the names of the attacks “Lateral-core Phaser” and “Core-lateral Phaser” were mistakenly swapped and have now been corrected.
Why could this cause wipes? In every raid, there are certain attacks or mechanisms that require proper positioning. In many situations, a wipe occurs after the incorrect execution of a mechanic in the fight.
In the case of the Chaos raid, this means that “Lateral-core Phaser” tells every player that they must first move to the side and then stand in front of the enemy to avoid being hit. The exact opposite is represented by “Core-lateral Phaser.” First, everyone must move in front of the monster and then move beside it.
The two keywords “Core” and “Lateral” are very important and convey to the player:
- Core = In front of the monster is safe first, then the sides are safe
- Lateral = The sides are safe first, then it is safe in front of the monster
With patch 7.16, Square Enix swapped the meanings of “Core-lateral Phaser” and “Lateral-core Phaser.” The trailer for the patch can be found here:
More Wipes – What Raiders Say About It
Many raiders believe that after a month of fighting, they will most likely cause a wipe since they have gotten used to the “wrong” order.
- “I will be hit by that so often in the next few weeks…” writes Another_Beano (via Reddit)
- “Fixing something like this a month later is crazy,” writes Furin (via Reddit)
Such mechanics become ingrained in muscle memory after many wipes or completions of the fight and require some adjustment even for seasoned raiders.
