Back then, Gigantic introduced a colorful MOBA. However, just a year later, the game was discontinued. Too few players and it couldn’t meet expectations. Now, 6 years later, the game is being released again.
The quirky hero shooter Gigantic was released at a time when hero shooters and MOBAs were just becoming big and trendy. With Overwatch, Paragon, or Paladins, several hero shooters hit the market, competing for player favor. Gigantic also faced accusations of having copied the successful Overwatch. Just as Ubisoft has been trying more or less successfully for years to copy successful games and package them into their proprietary “Ubisoft formula.”
With Gigantic, the development team from Motiga and Perfect World aimed to offer a particularly colorful and chaotic shooter. Like its companions Battleborn and Paragon, Gigantic had a small, enthusiastic community, but nothing that could keep up with the huge success of Overwatch a year earlier: In the summer of 2018, the developers shut down the servers of Gigantic. But now the game is experiencing a surprising comeback.
Gigantic returns to Steam after 6 years, aims to attract players
Does the game even have a chance? The folks at PCGamer are wondering whether Gigantic even stands a chance. After all, Gigantic was already late to the “hero shooter” party back then and is trying again now:
If Gigantic was too late to the party the first time to stay afloat, why should it be different half a decade later?
A major advantage of Gigantic is that it is quite unique compared to Paladins, Overwatch, or well-known MOBAs like Dota 2: There are no lanes, towers, creeps, or capture points, instead, it is always about fast-paced and action-packed battles. Specifically, it’s about defeating players to charge a particularly powerful ability. Thus, Gigantic plays more like a wacky arena shooter than a tactical League of Legends.
On the other hand, there is criticism of the return of Gigantic, stating that the struggling publisher and corporation “Embracer Group” is likely just trying to squeeze some money out of well-known brands. Because the Embracer Group severely miscalculated on the stock market and urgently needs money to fill various holes.
How is the game being received? A week after the release (April 9, 2024), Gigantic has over 2,000 reviews on Steam with 78% positive ratings. Many praise the design and the excellent battles. Criticism is mainly directed at the numerous bugs and the weak servers.
Many players therefore say: The game is really great graphically and gameplay-wise, now the developers just need to get the bugs under control and then it will be a true insider tip.
More insider tips for you: A different insider tip has been presented by colleague Benedict Grothaus. The game has now left early access and has received several major updates. Why the game has captivated the colleague for over 100 hours can be read on MeinMMO:
