Every character in Baldur’s Gate 3 can throw items, but really they are mainly intended for bombs and other explosive items. However, they are usually not worth the action – unless you use them correctly.
What kind of items are these?
- Thrown items come in various forms. The most common are all kinds of bombs.
- However, bombs are rarely used. It costs most characters an entire action to throw them and the damage is lower than most spells. The majority of top classes simply have stronger skills.
- However, there is a trick to trigger bombs multiple times, allowing you to exceed even the damage of higher spells.
This is how you use bombs correctly: The trick is that you must deal damage to bombs. Whenever a bomb takes damage, it explodes. This can theoretically happen infinitely per throw.
You have several options to stack damage instances on bombs, such as:
- Throws from great heights for fall damage.
- Damage areas like fire that damage the bomb upon impact.
- Certain items that create more damage instances.
The user toyhouze shows on TikTok what this looks like and uses some other items that deal additional damage when thrown. In his demonstration, a bomb is triggered four times, dealing 3d4+9 damage per throw. This totals between 40 and 84 damage per target. In comparison: a fireball deals between 10 and 60 damage (10d6) at maximum level 5.
This is how you cast multiple spells in one go:
Throwing is one of the strongest skills if used correctly
This trick is likely not an intended feature. Bombs exploding upon receiving damage is meant to punish careless players or allow for certain strategies and positioning.
The fact that multiple instances stack here sounds more like a bug. So it’s quite possible that it will be fixed in one of the upcoming updates. Currently, however, the trick still works.
The “Throwing” skill on its own can already be extremely powerful if used correctly, especially if you have characters with high strength in the group – like fighters or barbarians. You can simply throw enemies at other enemies or directly over cliffs into certain death.
Totem barbarians, who follow the monkey, even have a special option. By throwing food, they can blind enemies. While this isn’t completely overpowered, it can be quite useful in the right build. And in any case, it’s fun.
The community is quite clever when it comes to exploiting game mechanics. A trick that is frequently used by Honor mode players helps you to obtain items more easily. However, you need to have a thieving streak: Sneaky trick gives you free new shops in Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s a “must” for Honor Mode
