In an interview with TechCrunch magazine regarding his new book “Runnin’ Down a Dream,” he talked about current jobs and especially the impact of artificial intelligence.
And according to him, AI is not the biggest risk for a job, but rather going “safe” and avoiding risks.
Secure jobs could disappear, knowledge with AI as the new “superpower”
Bill Gurley argues that classic “secure” career paths lose stability in the age of AI because roles change or disappear rapidly due to AI. The traditional paths will become generally less interesting for employers:
If you follow the traditional path – contacting your university’s career center, signing up on a list, and waiting for a recruiter to screen 30 people in 20-minute slots – you look like a cog in the machine. You appear like a mass product. For this group, AI seems frightening, and perhaps it should be.
Gurley explains that instead, one should also take certain risks: One should take responsibility and deliberately place themselves in an environment with a high learning curve and uncertainty. Because the pure feeling of security that you currently have a comfortable and secure job can quickly become a problem: Because those could be exactly the jobs that might disappear long-term due to AI or restructuring.
The CEO of Walmart already advised graduates to take responsibility and be present in their jobs. This aligns with the recommendation Gurley makes in his interview.
Another recommendation from Gurley is that one should not be afraid of AI, but take it seriously. Because those who invest time and education in artificial intelligence now will have a significant advantage in the later professional world, which he himself refers to as a “superpower”:

The job interests among young people are also changing. In the past, everyone wanted to work at Google, Amazon, and the like. But many young people now prefer crisis-proof jobs and shy away from computer science. This is a significant problem for large tech companies as the workforce is getting older: Generation Z no longer wants to become programmers and many are opting for other careers: This is a problem for Amazon, Apple, and Google.
