Lord of the Mysteries is an “Anime” from China and launched in Germany last year. Now a complete MMORPG based on the series is coming.
What kind of series is this? Strictly speaking, Lord of the Mysteries is not an anime, but a Donghua, as it is an animated series from China. Nevertheless, it is available on the streaming service Crunchyroll, which primarily features anime. There, Season 1 is currently rated 4.8 / 5 stars (as of January 29, 2026, 10:00 AM).
In the series, we follow the experiences of Zhou Mingrui, who is reincarnated in the body of Llein Moretti. He lives in a world that could be from Victorian England in the 19th century. Steam engines, warships, and other signs of the budding industrialization are seen everywhere.
The special thing about the Donghua is the Transcender system. People gain supernatural abilities such as clairvoyance by drinking special potions. There is a complex system with 22 thorny paths that are divided into power levels.
The protagonist must find out how he died and what the Transcenders have to do with it. The anime was especially praised for its animations, which are said to have a higher frame rate than Solo Leveling. Now an MMORPG is following.
Anime now gets its own MMORPG
What kind of game will this be? In February 2023, China Literature Group presented an adaptation of the novel Lord of Mysteries. The game is being developed by SPARK NEXA with the help of Unreal Engine 5.
Currently, it is only possible to register for news internationally. In China, players can even participate in a beta phase starting on February 5, which is only applicable to this country. Whether a global test will follow is still unknown.
So far, we know:
- The title is said to have an open world, but so far only the capital Tingen City has been seen in videos.
- In the beta test, there will be 6 playable Transcenders, which are the equivalent of classes in MMORPGs.
- At release, the game will be available for both PC and Mobile.
- Character creation is said to be as detailed as in Where Winds Meet.
Additionally, just a few days ago, there was a gameplay trailer that showed the main character walking through Tingen City.
How is the gameplay received? The first impression is positive. The game looks just as beautifully animated as the anime template. At least that’s how the viewers feel on YouTube. However, it remains to be seen in the beta test whether exciting gameplay mechanics lie behind the beautiful facade or if the game will flop.
The scriptwriter of the anime is not as satisfied with the first 3 episodes as with the rest. He finds that Lord of the Mysteries goes much too fast. However, he praises himself for the subsequent episodes: Producer of an “Anime” complains about the first 3 episodes, explains why it gets better afterwards
