An American really wanted to have a yacht. Since he couldn’t afford the price, he built the yacht in his own garden.
Who is it about? Clyde Stires is an American who learned to handle cutting tools from his father at a young age.
With this knowledge as a foundation, he began to teach himself how to repair and build everyday items like toys. Years later, he used his extensive knowledge to realize a special dream: He built his own yacht. Spanish colleagues report this at Xataka.com.
American builds his ship in the garden because he needed sunny weather for the construction
Why did he build a yacht? Stires had bought his first boat years ago and wanted to go back to the sea. But that brought a problem: He couldn’t afford a yacht because they were unaffordable in the USA.
Instead, he took matters into his own hands. For the construction, he chose a city with a dry and sunny climate. Because moisture would only have delayed or even damaged the construction of his ship. He ended up in Perris, California.
After several sketches, calculations, and miniature versions, he got to work on building his yacht in 1987. His years of experience with building motor tricycles and converting a double-decker bus into a mobile home helped him. He worked on his yacht until 1994 when it was finally finished.
But then came the next problem: He had to somehow transport the ship to the sea. Because there was no sea in his city. For transport, he disassembled the yacht into its components and transported it to the sea. There, it was reassembled and named “Kaleidoscope.”
Stolen by a cartel and then sold to a charter company
What happened to the yacht? In his interview, Stires explained that his yacht was “stolen by a cartel” in Puerto Vallarta (Mexico).
Authorities did manage to recover the ship after great efforts. However, the process of returning the ship to the USA turned out to be so complicated and expensive that he ultimately had to sell the ship.
Meanwhile, the ship belongs to a yacht charter company, where it is used for private trips. The new owner also calls it the “limousine of the sea” and uses it for private outings or celebrations.
