On Steam and Twitch, the indie game Among Us is really taking off. In player reviews, it seems some friendships may be at stake. How is the game rated otherwise?
What is the new record? Among Us is celebrating a new milestone for the most concurrent players. Last Sunday, September 20, a peak of 388,385 people were playing Among Us simultaneously on Steam. That’s over 300,000 more players than at the beginning of the month and currently the highest peak for the game – a record.
Here’s how the player count looked in September on Steam:
- On September 1, a maximum of 67,013 people were playing Among Us simultaneously
- On September 8, a maximum of 180,400 people were playing Among Us simultaneously
- On September 15, a maximum of 292,823 people were playing Among Us simultaneously

With this peak record, Among Us even surpassed the Battle Royale PUBG on Sunday, which had a maximum of 365,984 players simultaneously on September 20.
Currently, Among Us is performing well in the top 10 on Steam compared to others. Giants like CS:GO and DOTA 2 are still leading the way.

Simultaneously, the game, which originally launched in 2018, is also a hit on the livestreaming platform Twitch.TV.
What makes Among Us so good? A look at the reviews on Steam
What is Among Us about? This multiplayer game comes from the developer Innersloth and revolves mainly around (a)social gameplay. A group of up to 10 players is supposed to prepare a spaceship for launch. Among the players are hidden impostors who are supposed to sabotage the honest work of the true astronauts.
While the astronauts try to repair the ship, the impostors try to kill the astronauts. If a body is found, the players vote on who is responsible for the death. Whoever receives the most votes is thrown into the lava or shot into space.
So it’s about convincing the group of your innocence. Either because you are genuinely innocent, or because as an impostor you want to appear innocent to secretly eliminate more astronauts.
- The astronauts win if enough repairs are made
- The impostors win as soon as all astronauts are dead
This is the crux: Here, social gameplay is at the forefront. If you play together with your friends, you need to explain to them why you are innocent. This can easily lead to heated discussions and the tone can quickly become harsh.
What lies behind the indie hit Among Us.
“I laughed and cried …”
This is what the reviews say: On the Steam page for Among Us, there are a total of 92,948 reviews (as of September 21). Of these ratings, 94% are positive, resulting in a Steam rating of “Very Positive”.
Here are some of the reviews:
- “Best game – 10/10
- Pro: It’s fun
- Con: You will have trust issues afterward”
- “This game is amazing. I laughed and cried because it gives me so much joy […]”
- “Among Us is a really great game based on the TTT concept. If you grab a few friends, you will have a lot of fun and experience heated discussions. A must for the price!”
- “If you play with the right people, the game is great. For 4 euros, there is endless laughter and rage for you and your friends”
- “Every time I play this, I end up arguing with my friends. I would recommend it – 10/10”
- “Destroys more friendships than UNO”
Especially card games like UNO are catalysts for heated discussions among friends who play together, due to mechanics like “You must skip now” or “Reverse” cards. Apparently, Among Us hits the same note.
Playing together with friends is especially praised. However, players also report problems in public lobbies.
A lot of communication happens only through chat, which diminishes the gaming experience. Using Discord and microphones provides a better experience.
