It offers excellent performance for WQHD (1440p) and enough reserves for users who also want to try 4K. The RX 6800 XT also performs well in ray tracing, even though it cannot keep up with Nvidia’s graphics cards. Where does the RX 7800 XT stand? AMD positions its new RX 7800 XT similarly. AMD also presents the RX 7800 XT as a WQHD graphics card and describes it as a mid-range graphics card. Thus, it is priced between the inexpensive entry-level graphics cards and the expensive high-end models.
On paper, it offers slightly fewer compute units and fewer stream processors. Both types are responsible for calculations. However, compared to the RX 6800 XT, other values increase:
- The base clock as well as the boost clock are significantly higher than with the old models.
- The size of the video memory remains the same; however, the memory is somewhat faster.
- Power consumption, however, decreases compared to the old RX 6800 XT. Instead of 300 watts, the consumption is only 263 watts.

Why is this graphics card so exciting? With the RX 7800 XT, AMD presents its alternative to the RTX 4070. Both graphics cards, from AMD and Nvidia, target gamers who want to play in WQHD. And this is now the largest group of gamers.

Are there any benchmarks yet? Kind of. AMD has released a few images where you can see the RX 7800 XT in direct comparison to the RTX 4070. Here you can see that the new AMD card is ahead in some games, while it has to take a step back in others. However, one should always take such official data with caution.
What is still missing? What we miss the most is the direct comparison to the RX 6700 XT and RX 6800 XT. In the worst case, it may show at release that the new cards only marginally outperform the old models in performance.
This would make the cards considerably less interesting as a direct upgrade from the 6000 series and would more likely appeal to users who still have an old GTX 1060 or an RX 480 in their PC. In particular, because the upscaler FSR can also be used with old graphics cards and does not require any GPU from the 7000 series.
However, these are purely speculations. The first independent tests, which are likely to come in early September, will provide more insight.
