In the Amazon shop, the upcoming MMO New World is listed with a release date after several delays. Originally, New World was supposed to be released this year. It was said that the MMO is now expected to launch in Spring 2020.
Amazon has listed New World on its product page in the online store with a release date.
The listed date is May 25, 2021.
Is this the official release? No. There has been no release announcement from Amazon Game Studios. The official website of New World also does not mention a release date.
The listed release in the shop could just be a placeholder date.
How the release changed
- Initially, the release date for New World was set for May 2020 – but Amazon postponed it on April 9. The reason given was the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
- The new release date was supposed to be August 25, 2020 – which was postponed on July 10.
- The current expected release date for New World is officially set for Spring 2021 – The astronomical spring next year spans from March 20 to June 21.
- On September 7, August 25, 2020, appeared as the release date in the Amazon shop. However, it is unclear whether this is indeed correct as a release date.
Amazon wants to release a “finished game”
This is what Amazon said about the delay: The New World team states that the delay comes after feedback from alpha testers and after reviewing the feature list (via New World).
It is said: The alpha testers liked the game, but they want to see more of it. They especially want to experience more “mid-game and end-game experiences” in Aeternum.
In order for players to fully immerse themselves in the game, they want to bring more of this content so that players feel like they are playing a complete game when it releases in 2021. The beta test, which was actually supposed to start in July, will also be postponed.
What’s behind it: The New World team does not mention it, but Amazon’s efforts to enter the gaming market faced a significant setback. The reactions to “Crucible” were so weak that Amazon pulled the shooter back and reverted it to a beta state.
In 2018, the game “Breakaway” already failed and Amazon discontinued it.
The feedback on New World has so far been mixed:
- New World was originally conceived as a PvP MMO with a focus on survival and a gigantic world.
- However, in December 2019, Amazon announced a reorientation for New World. They wanted to place a stronger focus on PvE.
- As a result, there are significant doubts in the community about whether the team can finish enough PvE content in a short time to meet the demands of PvE players.
The second delay can be seen as a reaction to this criticism: Alpha testers apparently missed game content in the middle and endgame. There were also big question marks surrounding these areas in public discussion.
The mood before the start of the beta for New World has been divided recently.
Preview event provided insight into the MMO
As a consolation for the postponed release, Amazon offered a short preview event that took place from August 25 to September 5. Another event is to follow in November, but that will be a closed alpha with NDA.
