Crucible, the promising new hero shooter from Amazon, is dead. The developers had actually returned the game to beta to try to save it. But apparently, no one at the developer knows how to do that. Therefore, the game is now officially at an end. What this means for you players, you will find out here at MeinMMO.
What happened? Crucible is dead. The developers have explained in a sad statement that it would no longer make sense to continue developing the game. They said they did everything in their power, but ultimately concluded that it was all in vain.
They simply see no future for the hero shooter and with a heavy heart, it was decided not to continue developing the game.
Big farewell and refund planned
What happens now? In the coming weeks, the developers will hold one final test weekend. You can play the game again via the playlist. In addition, custom rounds will be possible.
On November 9, 2020, it will be over and the developers will deactivate the servers. That’s it for Crucible. The game will then be dead and buried.
But I spent money on it! Then you are in luck, as the developers have promised a refund. How this will work, you can find out here on the official Amazon website or on Steam, depending on where you got the game.
Why did Crucible have to die? The reasons for the failure of Crucible are manifold:
- Hero shooters peaked in 2016 and since then the popularity of such games has declined
- Crucible felt “off” to many players. Especially the gunplay was a problem because there was hardly any feedback when hitting or getting hit
- The balance of the heroes was also quite arbitrary. There were extremely overpowered characters and others that were barely playable
- Overall, the game gave many players a very unfinished and cobbled-together impression
All of this quickly led to a drop in players, so the developers soon had to disable two out of three game modes shortly after launch to at least have enough players for the last mode. As this also did not work, the game was eventually returned to beta and made accessible to the public only on specific test weekends.
Developers move to New World
What will happen to the developers? The devs of Crucible will, according to the last developer blog, join Amazon’s second major game project, namely the MMORPG New World. This game also had its problems and the beta as well as the launch were suddenly postponed to early 2021 during the summer.
I was hoping for a comeback of Crucible
The news of Crucible’s death hit me hard today. Despite all its weaknesses, I really enjoyed and played the game a lot. I thought the setting and the characters were great. And I had a lot of fun with the game modes. When it went back into beta, I was even glad and thought, “Yes, this is good, they should fix it quietly, then it will be fine.”
Well, nothing came of it. The game was essentially put into an artificial coma and never woke up from it. Again, a game that I really liked is dead. I’m slowly giving up on the original, colorful niche games and am just playing generic mainstream stuff like Call of Duty…
