Amazon teams up with Embracer to bring a new MMORPG in the Lord of the Rings universe. At the same time, a beta player of Throne and Liberty leaks almost 10 minutes of new gameplay for the next big MMO. This and more in the MMORPG weekly recap.
The highlights of the week:
- Amazon is developing an MMORPG based on the Lord of the Rings with an open world for PC and consoles. The head of development promises that he wants it to be the “biggest MMO ever”.
- Throne and Liberty will be similarly large and completely free-to-play, as has now leaked. In fitting news, a leaker released 10 minutes of new gameplay from the MMORPG, showcasing many interfaces, weapons like the dual crossbow, and various transformations.
- The new MMO Chrono Odyssey impresses not only with strong graphics but also with its combat system.

What happened with the major MMORPGs:
- Guild Wars 2 moves forward with a big update. Meanwhile, players hope for a bit less green.
- The Caller in World of Warcraft gets a third specialization and people are up in arms about it.
- Aion Classic pulls out heavy guns in the USA and offers a whole month of premium benefits to celebrate the launch of the new class. Whether our version will follow suit is still unclear (via massivelyop).
- Tarisland looks like World of Warcraft and is now surprisingly coming to the West. In a new trailer, they show what the game is about.
What happened with the minor MMORPGs:
- TibiaME is celebrating its 20th birthday. It is the mobile version of the MMORPG Tibia, one of the oldest mobile MMOs ever (via massivelyop).
- The PvE hardcore MMORPG Embers Adrift is launching a new free weekend. You can try the game for free on June 2nd on Steam (via massivelyop).
- EVE Online is bringing back ads with the new update that players can design themselves (via mmorpg.com).
- The developers of Lord of the Rings Online comment on Amazon’s announcement, but see no threat to their game.
- Ethyrial Echoes of Yore struggled after its launch and was eventually completely restarted. However, that helped little, as the MMORPG is again struggling with serious bugs (via massivelyop).
- The 2D MMORPG Mad World was able to excite some fans at the beginning. Now they wonder when the game will finally come to Steam (via massivelyop).
Nightingale delays its release, and Fractured might return soon
What happened with the MMORPGs in development:
- The creators of Worlds Adrift announce a new MMO with airships, this time called Lost Skies (via massivelyop).
- NetEase is founding a new studio under Jack Emmert to develop an MMO in the world of Warhammer (via mmorpg.com).
- Nightingale is a survival PvE MMO that should have been playable a long time ago. Now the developers are postponing Early Access to fall 2023 (via mmorpg.com).
- Fractured Online begins the account migration from Gamigo and reports that there could be a new build by the end of May so fans can continue to play (via mmorpg.com).
