In the MMORPG New World, shell companies have caused frustration among players. Now Amazon Games is intervening.
What is Amazon Games changing? As Amazon Games announced in a letter from the developers on December 1, the company system of New World is set to receive a change.
Companies are comparable to the guilds of other games and are a requirement for participating in the PvP wars of the MMORPG.
The most important adjustment is an increase in the cooldown period for company changes as well as a restriction on the war player list. This is intended to prevent multiple companies from being controlled by the same players.
Additionally, there will be more opportunities to craft recipes. There will also be significantly lower contribution requirements for city projects (via newworld.com).
Why is there a change in cooldown periods? By joining a company, players in New World can declare war and besiege territories. This provides players with benefits such as a discount on fast travel or income through taxes. Consequently, it is very frustrating when a large portion of the territories is controlled by the same players.
As early as May 2022, Reddit user IYELLVALHALLA reported that his server had a problem with “shell companies.” Shell companies typically exist only on paper and are intended to serve a nefarious purpose. It’s similar in New World, as IYELLVALHALLA explains:
“This means: a company that creates other small companies with 5 members or so, so they can hold multiple territories and have different siege times. This way, no other company can split their forces to even have a chance to take those territories (via reddit).”
“They don’t just lead the wars, but the whole server”
Why are shell companies a problem? As indicated in the Reddit post, some large guilds are said to exist in New World that create additional small companies and place players to lead them.
With these smaller companies, the larger groups control numerous territories on a server and ensure they do not lose them. Still, companies do not take care of the territories and furthermore deny other players the opportunity to own a territory themselves.
Reddit user EasternWolverine348 also described the resulting problem on his server back in May with the following words:
They don’t just lead the wars, but the whole server. On my server, 2 to 3 large companies own everything under ‘shell companies’. […] These companies do not care about invasions, do not pay taxes, do not improve the cities, only the fortress. They also ensure that everything on the market is super expensive by buying everything up and selling it back for much more.

New World is on the right track: The change in the cooldown periods of companies and the war player list shows what has been hinted at in recent weeks: New World is on the right track as the year comes to an end.
Amazon Games is increasingly responding to criticism and wishes from players. Particularly the long-demanded implementation of Fresh Start servers has led to a surge in player numbers.
