The MMORPG Warhammer Online (2008-2013) is a sad story for many fans of PvP MMORPGs. Despite much potential and a fantastic license, the online role-playing game only had a short life. But in 2023, fans can still play it.
What is the sad story behind Warhammer Online?
- The MMORPG Warhammer Online was launched in 2008 as an unofficial successor to “Dark Age of Camelot” (released 2001), a cult PvP MMORPG that let huge masses of players fight against each other in battles before WoW.
- Warhammer is a fantastic and rich license. At launch, Warhammer Online received good reviews around 85% and won “Best MMO 2008” awards everywhere.
- But ultimately, the MMORPG fell below EA’s expectations. The license with Games Workshop expired and the game died in 2013, after just 5 years.
For many fans of the game, that was far too early and even before the game could unleash its full potential. To this day, the man behind the project, Marc Jacobs, is angry with EA and is now doing his own thing.
Private Server Brings Open RvR “Like Before” Back
What is this event about? Since 2014, fans have been running a private server called “Return of Reckoning” for Warhammer Online. The event “Sigmartag” is currently taking place there. It runs until May 30.
The event offers players exactly the “Open Realm vs. Realm” action that fans loved about Dark Age of Camelot and for which Warhammer Online was also known.
As PC Gamer reports, players can earn a “Skull of the Fallen Opponent” when they kill an enemy.
These skulls can be exchanged in the capital cities of their faction for boosts.
The details of the event “Sigmartag” can be found in the video:
At 1000 skulls, a relic spawns that can be picked up and taken to the opponent’s shrine to secure further bonuses.
That’s pretty much the stuff that fans of the “old Realm vs. Realm” MMORPGs like Dark Age of Camelot or Warhammer Online still rave about – “the good old days.”
For Warhammer fans, there is new hope for a fresh MMO:
