It has been almost a year since the Xbox and PS5 were released. Yet consoles and exclusive titles are still in short supply. We at MeinMMO are looking at the current situation.
What is the availability of the consoles? Soon it will be time for the next-gen consoles, the PS5 and Xbox, to celebrate their first anniversary. However, for many users, there is little to celebrate as consoles are still scarce: either they are sold out immediately or available only at inflated prices from greedy scalpers.
Many users desperately want a next-gen console, but currently, it doesn’t look like the situation will improve significantly in the coming months. Even now, the PS5 ticker on MeinMMO is booming, as many have yet to be supplied with a next-gen console.
Especially the shortage of components for the PS5 and Xbox continues to hinder the production of the consoles.
So what is the current situation? Is it even worth buying such a console given the current number of games?
The number of exclusive titles for the PS5 and Xbox is limited in 2021
What does it look like on the PS5? On the PlayStation 5, there are about
- Destruction AllStars
- Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
- Returnal
- Demon’s Souls (Remake)
- Astro’s Playroom (pre-installed on the PS5)
released. These games can actually only be played on Sony’s next-gen platform, as there is no version planned for the PS4, as the performance of the PS4 is not sufficient for the games.
What does it look like on the Xbox? Here the situation is much more confusing than on the PlayStation. Microsoft releases many games not only for the Xbox Series X but also for Windows PC (via blog.xbox.com). Therefore, you do not necessarily need a console for many games; a decent gaming PC is often sufficient.
What do gamers think about the situation? On Reddit, for example, one user mocks (via reddit.com):
I still haven’t seen any games that justify buying a new console. People are either playing games that are 10 years old or pixel games [referring to indie games] that could run on a calculator.
While people say that one can play PS4 games on the PS5 thanks to backward compatibility, some counter that there is no need to spend 500 euros for that. Because the games run perfectly fine on the PS4, even if you have to forgo the fast SSD. The same goes for the Xbox, where you can also play old games on the Xbox Series X.
Nevertheless, some of these users probably fear missing out and not necessarily that there are no special games for the console. After all, people want to be among the first to have such a new console in their cabinet or in front of their TV.
