Pirates of the Caribbean is a still-popular series that consists of five movies. The adventures surrounding Jack Sparrow are all entertaining, but differ in quality. In our ranking, we clarify which part is the best.
In 2003, a film series began in theaters, based on an attraction at Disneyland. Yes, you read that right. Pirates of the Caribbean was originally just a wild amusement park ride. However, it resulted in a film that came out to immense success that hardly anyone expected. After the successful first installment, four more followed. The series even made it to video games.
In particular, the main character Jack Sparrow, but also his two companions Elizabeth Swan and Will Turner have captivated the audience. Changes in the cast and storyline over the years have led to varying results.
In our ranking, we want to clarify how the films compare against each other. The list is of course subjective and based on the author’s opinion. If yours differs, feel free to let us know in the comments. And now let’s set sail!
Rank 5: Salazar’s Revenge
The latest installment in the series is also the weakest. Jack Sparrow faces an old adversary, Captain Salazar. This “owes” Sparrow a curse – revenge is, as the title suggests, inevitable.
Instead of Elizabeth and Will (they only get a guest appearance), their son appears here, along with the astronomer Carina – both fail to become memorable characters. They quickly fade into obscurity. Even Javier Bardem as Salazar seems somewhat wasted in this film, full of weak visual effects. We even see Jack Sparrow in some flashbacks as a young man, but that also comes off as more creepy than convincing from a technical standpoint.
Salazar’s Revenge is thus poorly executed and only for hardcore fans of the series. At least Geoffrey Rush returns as Barbossa, and who knows if it wasn’t also Johnny Depp’s last appearance in his role.
