5. Prometheus
Release: 2012
Prometheus is probably the most controversial film of the Alien series, as the Xenomorphs are hardly seen except for a small appearance. It takes place before the first part and deals with the question of the origin of humans.
The first half of the film is still beautifully atmospheric, has some nice set design, and with Michael Fassbender, there is a gripping character. The philosophical questions are an interesting concept. Unfortunately, the second half sinks into the action realm and throws the philosophical mood out the window.
Prometheus was the next step to demystify the Xenomorphs. However, due to the almost non-existent aliens, it can be ignored.
4. Alien 3
Release: 1992
Alien 3 is less action-packed than the second part, but also less scary than the first. It sometimes reminds you of a classic slasher, just on a prison planet. The atmosphere at the beginning of the film is really good, especially the combination of Sigourney Weaver and Charles Dance.
Alien 3 is also the best film in the series that engages with philosophical concepts and does not destroy the mythology of the Xenomorphs.
Throughout the film, this atmosphere slowly fades away, but the action sequences and set design remain entertaining. Although Alien 3 does not reach the predecessors, the film is still commendable for its positive aspects.
3. Alien: Romulus
Release: 2024
Fede Alvarez has directed Alien: Romulus after Evil Dead, the next remake of a horror classic. Alien: Romulus is probably the most beautiful part of the series, paying homage to all Alien films. Not only 1 and 2 find homage here, but also hated films like Alien 4 or Prometheus.
David Jonsson as Andy performs fantastically here and is one of the few characters from the franchise that remains memorable, apart from Ripley. The body horror is also impressive.
Unfortunately, the film takes too long to get going, and the Xenomorph could have shown more. Nevertheless, Alien: Romulus is worth it for horror fans and lovers of the franchise.
