What kind of series is this? HBO, the company behind major series like Game of Thrones, is currently working on a new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series. It will start with the adaptation of the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The new adaptation will be filmed with an entirely new cast. Whether there will be cameos from the film cast is currently unknown. But everything that is already certain can be read in this article.

Harry Potter as a Series: Start and Duration

When does the “Harry Potter” series start? Contrary to previous assumptions, the series will not start in 2027, but already on Christmas 2026. A specific date is not yet available.

How many seasons will there be? The series is expected to dedicate one season to each of the seven novels. Accordingly, there will likely be a total of seven seasons.

The entire series is planned to be released within 10 years, especially to keep the young actors at the right age. The first two seasons are expected to be produced together.

Where can you watch the series? In Germany, HBO Max has been available since January 2026. This is the streaming service of Warner Bros., where the series will be released at the end of 2026.

What will the series about Harry Potter be about? The recently released trailer features dedicated scenes from the first Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The first season will likely revolve around the plot of this book.

How close will the series be to the original? According to the creators of the series, it is supposed to stay true to the book source. Will old actors return? For most roles, it is not an option to cast old actors. The release of the first film was already 23 years ago. Therefore, the actors are now too old for their former roles, or sadly have already passed away.

Daniel Radcliffe himself, who originally portrayed Harry Potter, made it clear, that he will not participate in the new series, and is very happy about it.

One exception is actor Warwick Davis. In the “Harry Potter” films, he played the role of Professor Filius Flitwick, the house teacher of Ravenclaw. This role will be reprised in the series, as announced in early September 2025.

What is the filming location of the new series? Just like the “Harry Potter” films, a large part of the new series will also be filmed in the “Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden” in London. Therefore, it might be that parts of the well-known sets are reused again.

In May 2025, it was also announced that filming has taken place in France, near the lighthouse “Tévennec”. This is likely to cover the scenes on the deserted island, where Harry ultimately learns about his magical abilities.
