With Battlefield 2042, the series revamps old features like classes or the traditional conquest mode and refreshes the mechanics. Instead of classes, there are 10 specialists at launch, and MeinMMO shows you their abilities.
With Battlefield 2042, the series is heading into the future. Not only in terms of setting – the mechanics are also under scrutiny and are supposed to appeal to a new generation of players. In terms of classes, this means: more freedom, more unique abilities.
A total of 10 specialists will be available at launch, equipping you with unique abilities and essentially determining your class. MeinMMO explains the new class system and shows the specifics of each specialist.
Battlefield 2042: Classes Explained
How does the class system work in Battlefield 2042? Basically, the familiar class division still exists in Battlefield 2042:
- Assault Soldier – Mobile soldier for the front
- Support – Support unit, also a medic
- Pioneer – Responsible for heavy equipment
- Recon – Scout out enemies or disrupt them
In contrast to earlier Battlefield titles, there are significantly fewer restrictions on weapon selection.
Unlike in Battlefield 5, as a recon you can also use weapons with less range, and an assault soldier has access to long-range calibers that were previously only available to a recon. This generally makes classes more variable, and your enemies can no longer easily identify your combat range specialization at a glance.
Your class is determined by your specialist. These are specialized soldiers whose abilities are meant to support your playstyle. Each specialist has an active and a passive ability that we will introduce to you in this article. In the story, most specialists are called “Non-Patriates” – stateless fighters whose home nation has collapsed.
However, you have the freedom to choose within the team and can also take the same specialist as your comrades – this also applies to enemies. In the “Hazard Zone” mode, it’s different – here you can only take one specialist per class.
All Assault Soldiers at the Launch of Battlefield 2042
Assault soldiers are built for the front and generate aggression with their abilities, but they can also use them for protection or retreat.
Webster Mackay – Movement Expert
- Name: Webster Mackay
- Origin: Canada
- Class: Assault Soldier
- Active Ability: Grappling Hook
- Passive Ability: Agile
The Canadian effortlessly reaches positions for which others would need air support. The grappling hook is very versatile and makes Mackay a dangerous soldier who can appear anywhere.
Additionally, you have better mobility when aiming down sights due to the trait “Agile”. Your movement speed is higher when aiming down sights than with other specialists.
Dozer – Frontline with Shield
- Name: Santiago “Dozer” Espinoza
- Origin: Mexico
- Class: Assault Soldier
- Active Ability: Ballistic Shield SOB-8
- Passive Ability: Explosion Resistant

- Class: Recon

- Origin: USA
- Class: Pioneer
- Active Ability: Fortification System
- Passive Ability: Veteran
Irish is already known from the story of Battlefield 4 and brings a two-part fortification system into BF2042. You can set up a shield to protect yourself and the APS-36 sentry system that intercepts and neutralizes incoming grenades.
His passive ability grants you armor and other, yet unknown bonuses when you neutralize an enemy.
These were the 10 specialists available at the launch of Battlefield 2042.
The revamped class system allows you more freedom than in the predecessor Battlefield 5. Since you can choose any weapon with all classes, you have many more options available, and the specialists support your gameplay through their abilities.
