Activision Blizzard, the company behind Call of Duty (CoD) and WoW, has secured the rights to a special patent. The focus is primarily on enhancing user experience. An AI is supposed to be responsible for this. But how exactly is this supposed to work?
A registered patent is intended to protect technical inventions or innovative products from undesirable imitation. Many of them do not necessarily make it to a final product, but some patents have at least made it in a stripped-down form to the PS5.
Now a patent from Activision Blizzard has been discovered that is supposed to bring a special improvement for players. It is about the soundtrack that you must hear in the game – unless you have already turned off the music beforehand.
If you leave your music on, you can find good headset and headphone recommendations here:
AI is supposed to ensure that every gamer gets to hear individual music
What kind of patent is this? Activision Blizzard has registered a patent. The idea behind it is to create individual soundtracks for players using machine learning. Each player is supposed to end up hearing a soundtrack that is tailored to their individual situation.
What exactly is behind this? Activision Blizzard writes in the patent application about a “Dynamic generation and modulation of music based on game events, player profiles, and/or player reactions.”
This means: If you are fighting against a specific boss or are under intense pressure from the game, the AI can react to this and play you the appropriate music. In this way, it can emphasize your feelings or intensify emotions.
According to the patent, the software is supposed to analyze the “mood” of the location where the player is currently located in the game and then generate corresponding music. For gamers who turn off the music right at the beginning of the game, this patent may become less relevant. For all others, however, it means being able to immerse themselves even deeper into the game. In technical terms, this is called “immersion.”
When this AI technology will come is currently unknown
When is this technology supposed to come to the games? Since this is currently only a patent, it may take some time for its implementation. Manufacturers often register patents and then “take their time” with the implementation.
Other interesting patents: Not all patents excite gamers. For example, Sony introduced a patent that caused a lot of excitement. Here, the option was presented for viewers to determine who should participate in a match and who should be kicked:
