Forums like Reddit are full of toxic comments. A study has now presented the worst subreddits, and they are all online games.
What was examined? On the site Clutch has set out to determine the most toxic players based on their subreddits.
For this, they used the Toxic Comment Classifier. This is an artificial intelligence that filters out and highlights insults. It allowed to see in which subreddits the most insults occurred. In total, 1.3 million Reddit comments were checked.
What comes out? Anyone who is sure that League of Legends is in first place is mistaken. The MOBA ranks 9th, with many MMOs and online games ahead of it.
Shooters are at the top
These are the rankings: Shooters occupy the top spots. The Call of Duty series is even represented twice. We present the ranking as a result. Below we have written out the game names again:

- Payday: The Heist
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
- Rust
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
- Dota 2
- Mortal Kombat
- Battlefield
- Mount & Blade
- League of Legends
- Binding of Isaac
What stands out? The communities in which the most insults are thrown are all multiplayer games. The communities where playing together is involved seem to be particularly toxic.
League of Legends, which many consider to be the most toxic game, only ranks 9th here. The MOBA is popular among many toxic streamers, and anyone who has been there has surely experienced some harsh treatment.
Our author Philipp Hansen also faced such players in his early rounds.
In 10th place is Binding of Isaac, the first single-player title. So, it’s not just online games that are toxic, but also communities around single-player games.
How seriously can this evaluation be taken? The artificial intelligence only filters insults and does not evaluate them. In some communities, it’s common to be toxic to each other, which may not necessarily be considered an insult.
So, it can certainly be the case that in Modern Warfare or Payday, players insult each other but mean it in a more playful way. In League of Legends, however, the insults tend to be more malicious and are felt as such.
The largest subreddits of MMORPGs are not represented on this list, by the way. In this genre, players seem to be somewhat friendlier towards each other, at least according to the artificial intelligence.
