Agent Coulson was originally only supposed to have a small role in Iron Man, as actor Clark Gregg mentioned in an interview. Later, he became a prominent figure in the Marvel Universe.
Actor Clark Gregg made his first appearance as Agent Coulson in Iron Man (2008). There followed more Marvel movies in which the character appeared, culminating in a series in which Clark Gregg got a leading role.
Agent Coulson was originally meant to be a much smaller role, one that didn’t even have a name.
“Now I have a name, that’s cool”
Clark Gregg told Cinemablend on March 11, 2019, about the beginnings of his Marvel character.
At first, Agent Coulson was only expected to have minimal screen time. However, the actor was able to impress the film’s decision-makers so well with his interaction with the other actors that they promptly added new scenes for him:
Agent Coulson was a small role, if at all, then two scenes. And they somehow liked the banter. They liked that the presence of S.H.I.E.L.D. was there, and suddenly they added seven more scenes!
Next, Pepper Potts says: “Thank you, Agent Coulson.”
And I thought: “Now I have a name, that’s cool.”

After his appearance in Iron Man, the character appeared in several other Marvel films: Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011), and The Avengers (2012). Clark Gregg also returned to his role in Captain Marvel (2019).
With the Marvel series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Agent Coulson was even promoted to the main character, who is at the center of events alongside his agent team. The series spanned 7 seasons before it ended in 2020.
The actor reflected that the success of Marvel in recent years lies mainly in the openness. They try out new ideas that end up being well-received, just like in the case of his character:
But I always thought there was a secret, namely that even in those early days there was a trust in the filmmakers, a trust in what they saw.
If they felt something was working, they stuck with it. There’s a kind of flexibility that I believe has as much to do with the longevity of this project as anything else.

With “Secret Invasion,” a new series from Marvel debuted this summer. However, it did not convince our colleagues from Filmstarts. Why it is even considered the “worst MCU series” can be read here.
Not only in film and television did Agent Coulson become a prominent figure in the MCU. The character also made his debut in the comics in April 2012 in Battle Scars Vol #6 with the nickname “Cheese”.
When another actor talked about his superhero role, he was initially not taken very seriously. Earlier this year, his 3rd solo film hit theaters:
When Paul Rudd talked about his big role in the MCU, people just laughed
