On Tuesday evening, Ajax Amsterdam sensationally eliminated the defending champion Real Madrid 4:1 from the UEFA Champions League. This was also noticeable in FIFA 19.
This is how the Champions League match went: The Dutch traditional club had to overcome a 2:1 deficit from the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16. Against the defending champion Real Madrid, this seemed like an impossible task.
But the team led by goalscorers Ziyech, David Neres, Tadić, and Schöne not only played sensationally, they also scored four goals against the “Royal” squad. A deficit from which Real could not recover. In a wild match, the underdog triumphed – and suddenly became extremely popular in FIFA 19.
“What a performance”: Players want Hero cards
This is how the FIFA community reacts: Not only in real football, but also in the FIFA 19 community, the “Miracle of Madrid” was celebrated. Because not only in the Champions League mode does the European competition play a role: In Ultimate Team, Ajax players are currently receiving a lot of attention.
For fun, “End of an Era” cards for the Real players are being suggested in the FIFA subreddit, while for match winner Tadic, pretty much every kind of special card is being proposed. A Reddit thread voted by over 2400 users simply calls for: “Dear EA, please give the entire Ajax team Hero cards.”
These are Hero cards: Such cards do exist in FIFA 19. The purple Hero cards are awarded only to players who have achieved extraordinary performances, such as winning a decisive match almost single-handedly. There are not many of them in FIFA 19 yet.
Recently, FIFA fans have been overwhelmed by the abundance of special cards, but in this particular case, most would likely overlook it. Especially since the Ajax cards are currently skyrocketing in price on the transfer market.
Ajax players make the cash register ring
Ajax prices explode: Anyone who bet on the underdog to win and stocked up on Ajax players before the match must have made a nice profit. The Champions League victory was immediately noticeable on the transfer market.
For example, Tadić’s UCL card, whose price started to climb during the match. From a value of around 2,800 coins, the card jumped to 7,500 – and it is still trending upward.
Tagliafico sold out: Even Tadić’s teammates saw their price ceilings suddenly drop. Especially the special cards that are currently available for Ajax became increasingly popular. However, Tagliafico’s RTTF card overshadows all others.
The value of this card increases with each round Ajax progresses in the Champions League. Since the Dutch were close to elimination against Real, the RTTF card was relatively cheap to obtain. Then the victory came, and the price exploded:
“Tagliafico bought me Ronaldo”: A player on Reddit reports: “I had a million and thought ‘screw it’ and spent everything on Tagliafico, who just cost 30,000 coins. I made 600,000 coins in 3 minutes.”
Shortly after, the same player noted: “Damn, Tagliafico is extinct. I could have made another 200,000 if I had waited five more minutes. Anyway, I’m still happy.” And indeed: The RTTF card is currently not available on the transfer market anymore. Some players evidently still trust Ajax to take the next step.
