The end of Battle for Azeroth is causing a lot of reactions among WoW players. However, very few of them are positive.
Last night, the final cinematic of World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth was released. The heroes defeat N’Zoth and together with him destroy the vision of Ny’alotha. Cortyn has already expressed disappointment about the cinematic, but the official forums and Reddit are also full of complaints and criticism. But what makes players so angry? Why are they disappointed and what exactly are they saying about the latest cinematic?
What are the players saying? In more than a dozen threads in the WoW subreddit, the cinematic is being discussed. We have picked out some quotes that have received a lot of support in the form of upvotes and likely reflect the opinions of many players.
Here says Kotouu:
Okay, this is not nearly as cool as Furorion doing his Anime battle stuff. I don’t usually say this, but this was indeed disappointing.
Other players think that this cinematic is a result of the WoW team hastily wrapping up Battle for Azeroth and now working on Shadowlands. Anivaries writes:
This was literally an “Everyone off the ship” cinematic, where this one developer fixed the cinematic in 50 minutes so he could go back to work on something else (hopefully Shadowlands) […]
The view is also shared by tomfuel:
This really shows how rushed Patch 8.3 is.
Blizz simply doesn’t care about Battle for Azeroth anymore, they are completely focused on Shadowlands. But still… damn, not even a decent cinematic to end the expansion.
What a crappy ending. Zero effort.
Or somewhat more cynical, as Razormoon_92 puts it:
Sylvanas made the right decision. She saw this crap coming and canceled her subscription.
LordWaffleSocks mourns that N’Zoth, such a story-rich character, has met such an unspeakable end:
Did they really just blast an old god out of existence with a necklace?
15 years, Blizzard.
A story that spans millions of years.
Countless significant lore moments.
The corruption of Neltharion.
The curse of flesh.
Ulduar.
The Emerald Dream.
A damn necklace.
A few players even feel sympathy for the team responsible for the cinematics. Like NOYB94:
I feel bad for the cinematic team. It’s obvious they didn’t have enough time/resources to make this. Holy shit, they must be so ashamed that THIS is the cinematic for the end of an expansion.
Jesus, this abomination of a cinematic is just sad.
What makes the fans so mad? The primary criticism seems to be that Blizzard “burned through” an important villain without giving him a deserving amount of content. Players were already disappointed with the scope of Patch 8.3, and the short cinematic has now pushed them over the edge.
Additionally, it is criticized that the cinematic basically reveals nothing and does not open up any exciting plots for the future. In direct comparison to the explosive ending of Legion, where Sargeras stabbed his sword into Azeroth, this cinematic stands no chance.
The cinematic is a “Lord of the Rings” rip-off: Another point of criticism is that the cinematic resembles the end of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy in many details. However, not in a way that would be a cool reference, but rather disrespectful and lacking originality in the eyes of many players. YouTuber Bellular mentions this in his latest video, in which he also relays fan criticism.
But how do you see it? Do you find the ending acceptable? Or are you on the side of the frustrated and angry players?
