The main evil in the Star Wars universe is usually the Sith, but there are also smaller villains who are just as morally questionable. We will soon learn the fate of one of them after the films.
Attention Spoiler: The following article contains minor spoilers regarding the upcoming comic series Star Wars: The Legacy of Vader.
Who is it about? In Star Wars: Episode 1, we meet Watto. He owns
Shmi and young Anakin Skywalker as slaves. He is a large flying creature that behaves just as he looks.
Watto is a junk dealer on Tatooine and regularly lets Anakin participate in pod races but bets against him. After the race in Episode 1, Anakin is free, and later Shmi is also freed from Watto through gambling by the Lars family.
He exploited Anakin’s talent for technology, and after his liberation, he realized how important Anakin was for his business. As master
of the two Skywalkers, he was not exactly kind.
In Episode 2, Anakin and Watto meet again because he is searching for his mother. There, a large battle against the Tusken Raiders takes place, which is the first big step to the dark side.
A new comic shows that later, Anakin as Darth Vader returned to Watto. However, this did not end well for the junk dealer.
Darth Vader paid Watto a visit
What is this new story about? In February, the first issue of Star Wars: The Legacy of Vader by author Charles Soule and artist Luke Ross will be released. It actually revolves around Kylo Ren, who tries to figure out what it means to be the heir of Vader between Episodes 8 and 9.
For this, he tries to explore his grandfather’s past. As a preview for the second issue, panels have already been shown (via x.com). You can see Kylo Ren on Tatooine with some kind of cyborg.
It seems he also sees a vision of Vader, in which Vader is choking Watto with his force grip. In one panel, you can see Watto’s pain reflecting in Vader’s eyes. While it is not clear whether Watto dies, given Vader’s known behavior, one can assume that Watto does not come out unscathed.
In another panel, it appears that Kylo Ren is likely commenting on what he has seen with: That shouldn’t be the story. That should be erased.
But this could also be a reaction to something else; the preview does not reveal this exactly.
In the upcoming series, Kylo Ren will not only deal with the past. In Tatooine, he will also have to confront the Hutt clan and other creatures.
When can I read the story? The first issue of The Legacy of Vader will be released on February 5 in the English digital version in Germany. Issue 2 follows on March 12, 2025.
Anyone who prefers to have a complete version will have to wait until September 30, 2025, when several issues will be published as a larger volume.
