A developer of Dead by Daylight has lost his temper. Therefore, announcements have been made that were actually supposed to take longer.
The developers of Dead by Daylight are often accused of not being transparent with the community. Players are often left in the dark about planned changes, leading to discontent in the community.
Now one of the developers expressed himself poorly during the stream – which is why Dead by Daylight had to announce an upcoming feature prematurely.
What happened? During a live stream in which the developer Ethan Larson played Dead by Daylight, he was repeatedly confronted by viewers about the implementation of colorblind settings. A topic that has long been a concern for the community. However, Larson reacted in an irritated tone:
“Alright JC, it’s getting really boring to keep talking about the colorblind mode. We’ve heard it a million times. We know it. Continuing to bother us with it won’t change anything. If it’s done, it’s done, when we have the time for it or when someone decides that it’s something that needs to be done. You know? We know that many players want it and that it’s not a small group. We got it.”
This did not sit well with the viewers, and after the clip was released on Twitter and Reddit, it was not well received by the entire community. Players who have been waiting for years for a way to play Dead by Daylight with such options felt disregarded and that their needs were not taken seriously.
What happened next? After a backlash erupted on the subreddit and on Twitter, an unexpected message came from the official “Dead by Daylight” account on Twitter. They announced that a colorblind mode has been in development for some time and even showed some example images.
They stated:
“This is not how we wanted to announce it, but we believe that it’s the right time… we have been working on colorblind options for a while now and we plan to release them soon.”
“We want to ensure that we get it right and we hope that it will be included in the next major release [patch], but we cannot guarantee a release date yet.”
There was then an image of how different settings for various forms of colorblindness might look:
What is the problem? Although Dead by Daylight has been around for several years, there is still no support for different forms of colorblindness. These have been requested for years, and in many major games, such settings are now standard. The developers have always said that they would “address it someday” – but concrete results have yet to be seen.
Why is this so important? Dead by Daylight is extremely difficult to play for players with various forms of colorblindness, since colors play a significant role. For example, for someone who cannot perceive the orange-red scratch marks of survivors, it is nearly impossible to be a successful killer player. Also, different auras indicating the positions of generators or survivors are difficult, if not impossible, to perceive, as well as the reddish glow that appears in front of the killer.
A handicap that in a game like Dead by Daylight is double the burden.
There is also criticism: However, there are players who are against such options. Because after all, even normally sighted players can access the options and adjust the aesthetics of the game. Scratch marks might be more visible to normally sighted players under certain circumstances, which could be an advantage.
However, the general sentiment in the community seems to be that this small advantage for some players can be tolerated if it allows a large group of players to finally play “properly”.
What do you think about it?
Dead by Daylight is one of the games we recommend at “Find Your Next Game”.
