Amazon is on the verge of securing the rights to a “Mass Effect” series. Big things are coming for the fans.
In recent years, fans have been quite lucky with series based on video games. Whether it’s The Witcher, the DOTA series, or recently the worldwide success Arcane based on League of Legends, which is breaking all rating records – times are prosperous. Now, fans can apparently look forward to the adaptation of another legendary video game series: Mass Effect.
What has been revealed? A report from Deadline reveals that Amazon is currently about to “close a deal” and thereby create a series set in the Mass Effect universe. Amazon has previously produced several SciFi series, most recently being responsible for creating the final seasons of the hit “The Expanse.”
What story could the series contain? That is still completely uncertain. As the “Mass Effect” series is based on four massive games, all possessing a rich world with extensive background information, there is plenty of material to choose from. It could classically follow the hero’s journey of Commander Shepard or shed light on the beginnings, such as the “First Contact War.” Or one might focus on specific areas of the universe, like the shady Omega Station, with its seedy nightclubs and thriving drug scene.
The possibilities are countless, and due to the complexity of the universe, there is virtually free choice for a starting point to tell an exciting story.
When is the series coming out? As the deal is not yet finalized, only speculation can be done. It will certainly take a few years – from securing the rights to writing the story, casting the actors, and the actual filming typically takes several years. Fans should be patient and probably not expect a release in the next 2 or 3 years.
Mass Effect had a film in planning: Interestingly, this news comes shortly after it was announced that there will be no film adaptation of Mass Effect. Legendary Studios has been trying since 2010 to find a suitable spin for a film – but it seemed challenging to condense the rich universe into a suitable story within just 90 to 120 minutes. Something they already struggled with in Warcraft.
As soon as there are more updates or even first images from a “Mass Effect” series, we will of course report on MeinMMO.
Would you be excited for a Mass Effect series? Which part of the story should a series tell, and why should a Volus definitely be the protagonist?
By the way, Mass Effect is not the first video game series that Amazon is planning. Before this, the giant had already secured a legendary game series for a screen adaptation:
