The action RPG Torchlight 3 (PC, PS4, Xbox One) is receiving a winter update in mid-December. But how is the game doing right now, 5 months after the failed launch of the early access phase?
What is Torchlight 3? Torchlight 3 was originally planned as a sort of hack and slash MMORPG. An action RPG in which you explore the game world together with many friends and fight monsters. After numerous tests, the developers decided to change the game to a classic hack and slash with a focus on single-player, small co-op groups, and random areas.
You set off with your hero to complete quests, defeat monsters, and collect loot. This allows you to experience a story in which you will get your own fort that you can expand according to your ideas.
Slow recovery after poor launch
How is the action RPG doing? The early access launch of Torchlight 3 in mid-June was anything but successful. Two days after the release, 66% of the reviews in 2022 were negative.
At the official release in October, 46% of the 4,770 Steam reviews were positive. Currently, the ratings from 6,368 players stand at 48%.
How is the game being received now? Here we summarize a few of the newer reviews:
- The_Driver writes on Steam: “Endgame feels hastily cobbled together and lacks any real goal, except to reach higher levels, etc. Technical disaster, starts with long loading times and doesn’t even end with unreliable movement skills.”
- Ajora sees it a bit more positively: “I don’t understand why there are so many negative reviews. Is it the best thing since sliced bread? No. Is it the best action RPG ever made? Certainly not. Still, it’s fun.”
- holydonkey17 has hope for the game: “I won’t lie. The game is still very rough. There’s hardly any story and it’s quite buggy. But the developers are doing their best and post weekly updates and bring many improvements to the game. I believe it has a great future ahead.”
- C_WHOA agrees: “I really can’t understand why it’s so hated. Just play it and forget that it’s called Torchlight 3.”
- Guido thinks the game is actually good: “Great casual action RPG!”
Is it worth it now? Torchlight 3 is still struggling with issues like bugs and those looking for an exciting story could be disappointed. However, a lot has changed in the game since the release.
One problem is that the predecessor Torchlight 2 was very well received by players and the community was disappointed with the release of the third part. This still hangs over the action RPG. However, those who want to give the game a chance can expect a quite nice casual action RPG.
What’s new for the game? With the “Snow & Steam” update, winter is coming to the fantasy world of Novastraia. This means that you can decorate your own fort winter and Christmas style. New decoration options will be available to you through the “Snow & Steam” quest. This even includes an “ugly cat sweater.” Also included are new pets that will accompany you during your adventures.
Additionally, it is possible to acquire new legendary equipment. These include:
- A new mace
- A sword
- A shield
- A focus
- A set of armor
In addition, the following are included:
- A revamp of the Forged class with a new HUD, reworked skills, and a style station for visual customization, as well as
- bug fixes
- basements for your fort
- better rewards at higher difficulty levels
- optimizations for pets, drop rates, and more.
When is the winter update coming? The developers have not yet provided an exact launch date. However, it is expected to be released for Torchlight 3 in mid-December.
