Exoprimal delivers a mix of Anthem, dinosaurs, portals, explosions, and plenty of shooting in the trailer. Will it be good? It definitely looks crazy enough to work, thinks MeinMMO author Max Handwerk.
Okay, how do you best describe all of this? A pretty wild AI claims that we are chosen for some kind of test. For which? No idea, there’s not really much info. But that’s not so important because the action will soon shift to wild shooting anyway.
The game, however, does not skimp on enemies: Swarming hordes of raptors, buzzing across the screen like insects, a roaring T-Rex, aggressive ankylosaurs, and stegosauruses – these are the foes you will encounter.
And what is the best means against scaly attackers? Clearly, modern exo-suits, which remind a bit of Anthem. And of course, they don’t just have guns, but bows and crazy sci-fi abilities like shields that suspiciously resemble Destiny, as you can see more precisely from minute 1:15.
Additionally, lasers are constantly firing across the screen, something explodes, a plane crashes in between, and flying reptiles are being chased through a tornado.
Best check it out yourself:
The trailer itself initially appears like one of those classic trash films that are just completely over the top, but are fascinating because of that. Like “Kung Fury” or “Sharknado.”
By the way, Exoprimal comes from the creators of Dino Crisis. That was quite a popular title among fans in the early 2000s. The last official installment came out in 2003. Fans have been waiting for a new Dino Crisis for 19 years and now they get Exoprimal.
What kind of game will Exoprimal be? You can test it.
This is what Exoprimal is set to be: The official announcement of the game brings a bit more clarity. Story-wise, we are in the year 2040 and things do not look good, because “sudden dinosaur outbreaks have plunged the world into a crisis that threatens the existence of humanity” (via exoprimal.com).
Dinosaur that suddenly show up from portals and cause trouble – anyone who knows the old Pro7 series “Primeval – Return of the Prehistoric Monsters” knows that this is a big problem.
But the AI “Leviathan” can detect the outbreaks in advance and then sends out the “Exofighters” – that means you. You will be able to rely on the exo-suits, which are divided into “Attack”, “Tank”, and “Support.”
This is how it is supposed to play: “Dino Survival” is the heart of the game and presents two five-member teams with various objectives that must be completed. The team that finishes first wins. There will be different variants, from “Dinosaur Hunt” (defeat enemies) to “Data Transport” (escort) to energy stealing (collect energy) and more modes. You can find a closer look at our colleagues from GameStar in the preview.
Additionally, there is the “Neo-T-rex” mode, where you fight together against a mutated T-Rex. By the way, he is not the only special dinosaur: There’s also the “Gas-Neosaur” and the “Sniper-Neosaur” with special attacks. It also sounds like a toss-up between genius and madness.
This is how you can test: The game itself is scheduled for 2023, but there will be a closed network test beforehand. You can currently register for this via the official website. Applications are open until June 30, 2022.
- The first session will take place on July 11, 2022
- The second on July 25, 2022
- And the third on August 7, 2022
All three tests will take place exclusively via Steam. The full release will then also come on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
At least during the test, you should be able to get a first impression of what Exoprimal really is – a crazy creation or a brilliant co-op experience with dinosaurs.
