For 14 years, there has been silence about StarCraft: Ghost. Now, suddenly, there are screenshots and moving images from the unreleased game by Blizzard.
Blizzard has always been known in the past for not finishing projects if they do not meet their own quality standards – even though Warcraft 3: Reforged proves the opposite. One of those projects was “StarCraft: Ghost”. It was supposed to be a story shooter from Nova’s perspective. We also know Nova from StarCraft 2 or Heroes of the Storm.
Between 2005 and 2006, the “StarCraft: Ghost” project was then buried, and development ceased. There were only a few images of the project. But now, after more than 14 years, new images and even gameplay footage have emerged.
What do the infos show? The Magazine Kotaku reported that a Twitter user named Andrew Borman released some images from StarCraft: Ghost. Both the start screen, the mission selection, the briefing (which strongly resembles StarCraft) and an image from the actual gameplay showing Nova with her sniper rifle can be seen.
However, that was not all. New information has also appeared on YouTube, this time even video footage of a mission. The YouTube channel of Leerz Meneses shows parts from the third mission of the game.
Where do the scenes and images come from? The exact source of the images is difficult to trace. According to Andrew Borman, the screenshots were shared in some Xbox groups and have spread that way.
The origin seems to be a dev kit for the Xbox that contained an early (and unfinished) version of StarCraft: Ghost. Using a modded Xbox 360, they managed to get the version running and captured and spread gameplay.
Is the project still alive? No, StarCraft: Ghost is probably not being developed anymore. The gameplay scenes are clearly in a graphics style that can be distinctly categorized into the 2000s. So these are just snippets of what the game was supposed to look like back then.
In the coming days and weeks, surely more people will release gameplay and scenes from StarCraft: Ghost, so we can all get a good impression of where Blizzard wanted to go with the game.
Would you have liked to play StarCraft: Ghost? Or do you think it’s good that Blizzard canceled games that did not meet their own standards?
The Warcraft adventure “Lord of the Clan” was also canceled back then – but is now playable.
