The monsters of Minecraft are in for it. Their spawn rules are changing – we reveal what is new.
“There’s too little light!” is probably one of the phrases Minecraft players have heard often. Because if the game world is not illuminated by torches, lanterns, or fire, then monsters like zombies or creepers often appear, who can be a problem for one or another player.
What will change? Until now, most monsters in Minecraft could spawn when the light level at a certain block was 7 or lower. It was enough to be a few fields away from a torch for zombies, creepers, and skeletons to appear. The only solution was to place torches generously.
With the upcoming patch 1.18, this will change. Monsters can then only spawn in complete darkness – that is, a light level of 0. A single torch can cover a radius of 14 blocks and prevent spawn.
What does this mean? The changes are likely to drastically alter how players handle light in Minecraft. Until now, it was necessary to cover the entire environment around a house with torches to ensure that no creepers, zombies, or spiders invade the garden at night. With the next patch, this should change, since significantly fewer light sources will be enough to prevent the appearance of monsters.
Will it stay this way? That is questionable. Currently, this is likely mainly for the purpose of checking the new caves and the spawning of creatures in these caves. However, it is also conceivable that this new spawn rate remains permanent. This would surely help many Minecraft survival fans.
A small preview of the upcoming update has already been presented by the developers here in a video:
What else is in the update? A whole lot. After all, this is the second part of the “Caves & Cliffs” update, which is primarily supposed to bring changes to the caves and mountains. Other highlights include:
- New height: The maximum height is increased. The previous maximum of 256 rises to 320. Additionally, players can also descend further below 0 – down to a level of -64. The world is thus nearly 130 blocks larger.
- New mountain biomes: The peaks of mountains have been assigned to new biomes. From icy to full of flowers, there’s a bit of everything.
- New caves: Caves are created in a completely new way, being more winding, extensive, and interesting. They look like spaghetti and cheese. Additionally, there is a range of new biomes only in caves.
- New ore distribution: Ores will spawn differently than before, primarily less frequently on the surface. Basically, the spawn has been adjusted because the world is now larger. The exact details are still being worked out.
However, keep in mind that this is currently only an “experimental” snapshot of patch 1.18. There will likely be a lot of changes before the patch actually goes live. If anything drastic needs to be adjusted, we will report on it.
Do you think the adjustments are good and sensible?
