Addons are capable of changing many aspects of World of Warcraft. Now Blizzard is taking action against this and preventing addons like “WeakAuras” from perceiving everything.
A perennial topic of debate in World of Warcraft is the addons, as they can be quite powerful in Blizzard’s MMORPG. From simple enhancements of the user interface to calculations on which ability should be used most effectively at the next moment. Especially boss fights are often so hectic and chaotic that players use “boss mods” to see the timers of the most important abilities or have clearer, more distinct announcements.
Blizzard apparently wants to take action against this and restrict some mechanics of addons – but indirectly.
What is being done? Instead of directly restricting the functionality of the addons, Blizzard has implemented a new feature in Patch 10.1 Glut von Neltharion. This allows developers to mark buffs and debuffs as “Private Aura.” This should result in a buff or debuff being displayed in the interface, but addons will not be able to interact with it.
In such a case, WoW players could still adjust the display of such effects to make them stand out more clearly – but other functions with more complex behavior would then be impossible.
What impact will this have? That remains to be seen. After all, it is still unclear to what extent Blizzard will make use of this feature. It is quite possible that the “hiding” of buffs and debuffs will only be used in a few specific fights where there is a very special mechanic that forces players to solve it without addons.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen how extensively Blizzard will utilize these options.
What do you think of this initiative from Blizzard? A good way to deal with addons like “WeakAuras”? Should Blizzard take even more drastic measures? Or should they leave it alone?
